So… what exactly does “hand-tooled” mean?

It’s a phrase you hear a lot in leatherwork, but unless you’ve watched the process, it can be hard to picture just how much happens between a piece of raw leather and the finished product.

I created a timeline piece, using the same flower design at every stage of the process, stopping each piece at a different point along the way. From the first swivel-knife cuts, to beveling and shading, to paint, antique and finish, each step builds on the one before it.

This is what I mean when I say hand-tooled leather.

Every cut. Every impression. Every bit of depth and detail. Done by hand, one step at a time.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Sara, the artist and craftswoman behind Stacked M Custom Leather located in Stephenville, Texas.

I’ve always loved art as a whole, but leather was the first medium I found that let me make art functional. I can carve it, tool it, paint it, shape it, and then turn it into something that can serve a purpose for years to come.

I love it because every project is different, and half the fun is figuring out the three-dimensional puzzle of how to actually build the thing I dreamed up.

My style is heavily influenced by Western culture, with a modern twist and a whole lot of respect for the traditional craftsmen and women I learned from.

At the end of the day, my goal is pretty simple: make cool stuff that’s beautiful AND built to last.

Because function and fine art don’t have to be separate🤎
