Cathys Creations Cathys Creations I raise Sheep and try to make use of every bit of them. I also sell by the cut, from my shop. Very warm.

I sell the lambs as "freezer lamb", which means, I sell a whole or a half lamb to someone to have butchered and processed as they wish. I retain the hides and have them tanned and sell them, also in my shop. The wool, which must be removed every year, I spin myself into lovely yarns and sell either as yarn, or knitted into nice hats, mittens, socks, etc. I also make a cozy slipper with the hides on the bottom, and a knitted/crocheted upper.

Lambing is finally over. This year I had something strange occur. I had a ewe that was at least 2 weeks over due. I just assumed the lambs had died and eventually she would deliver some dead lambs. I even had decided to butcher her and made an appointment with a butcher. But then this morning, she went into labor. I managed to get out one lamb that was dead. The second lamb I could tell was alive, but I couldn't find the second front leg, which is necessary for delivery. Sometimes they can be delivered that way, but this was a large lamb and I could not get it out that way. So, I more or less shoved everything back in and called the vet. He came and managed to get it out. They thought it was dead, but then it started gasping. They got out a third lamb that was the most perky. So I now have two more lambs, provided they both live. The mother has plenty of milk, so I am hopeful. I tubed them both to give them the best start. What a shock.

Of course, in the process of doing all that the ewes that had already lambed and lost their lambs, jumped the fence into the pen with the ewes with live lambs, so they are all mixed now. Don't know if I will even bother to separate them at this point. We will see how it goes. Nice to be done.

The lambing is going much more smoothly now, which doesn't necessarily mean that I'm not having any problems, but they seem to have slowed down a bit. I'm almost half way through and at present count have around 14 lambs running around. So I will have plenty of lambs for anyone who wants one. I still sell whole and half lambs, as well of specific cuts. If you wish a whole or half (to cut however you wish), let me know by the end of May.

My chickens are also starting to lay eggs now. If you are local, come buy some eggs.

In other news, we got a deer this year, and I tried making soap out of the fat. It turned out rather well. Can't really tell it from the sheep fat soap. So if any of you hunters out there shoot a deer, save the fat and I can make it into soap for you. It is really nice stuff. I have some bars for you to try to see if you like it.

Lambing has started. It was a very bad start. First there was the abortion, then a ewe had dead twins, and then died herself. Then had a set of twins, and the mother only had 1/2 a bag. I was aware of that and was watching the lambs closely but the lamb that I had seen nursing, so I wasn't watching that one so closely, died. Now she only has one left, and it seems to be doing well. Then I had another ewe lamb, and all was well, except she ended pushing out her uterous. Not a good thing. Got a vet to put it all back, but she will have to be a cull, as it will most likely happen again.
I am now having a break. I hope that means things will go more smoothly from now on.

I have finished my neuropathy protocol so life should get a little easier from now on. At least I should have more free time. And maybe the weather will warm up a bit. That would be nice. And I can start thinking about gardening.

Lambing time is fast approaching. Getting my barn set up and ready. Have had one abortion already, but that is basical...

Lambing time is fast approaching. Getting my barn set up and ready. Have had one abortion already, but that is basically my fault. I should not be exposing the ewe lambs to the rams. The breed combination I have now, often breed, but they seem to always have twins but don't have the body capacity to carry twins. She had no trouble with the delivery.

I am slowly recovering from last winters injuries. Hoping that this winter will be kinder to me.

It is also time to start ordering seeds for the garden. Been thinking about it but haven't done anything about it. #

It would appear that I haven't posted anything in quite some time! It did indeed start to rain after I planted the garden--and rained. and rained until everything was pretty much drowned. So I got nothing from the garden. We will hope that next year is better!

Since I injured myself feeding the sheep (a bale fell and knocked me down, and I injured my shoulders trying to get the hay from 4 bales high), I have gone to a chiropractor to have it all fixed. So far so good. Of course she then discovered that I have neuropathy in my feet. Working on that now. But I refuse to give up on the sheep. I will still be having lamb for sale. And being a real farmer I am hopeful that next year will be a better year, rain-wise. This is the second year in a row that we have gotten too much rain, at the wrong time.

The gun show is over and there is still a lot to do before winter. Hopefully I will be able to get it done. The barn needs to be cleaned, and I need to take the hides to Milwaukee for tanning. I just need to accumulate a little more energy from somewhere and I will be good to go. Every day is different these days.
