The secret to beautiful, airy flower arrangements? Sometimes it’s what’s happening underneath the flowers.

Chicken wire is my absolute favorite floral design mechanics, and here’s why:

1. It gives stems support without sacrificing that loose, natural movement.

✌️It’s reusable! I can pull it out, clean it, and use it again and again.

3. No floral foam required.

Last year I tried five different tools for dividing dahlias, and these scissors were hands-down my favorite.

They’re incredibly sharp, the thin blades can reach deep into tangled tubers, and they’re strong enough to do most of the work so your hands don’t have to. And if you’ve ever spent an afternoon dividing dahlias, you know your hands will thank you.

If you’re dividing dahlias this fall, these are the ones I’d reach for first:

Some people see a vase. I see an opportunity to give Medusa a floral makeover. I am who I am. 🐍🤷‍♀️

I bought this bust vase with one very specific vision in mind: Bells of Ireland: Snake Hair. I’ve been ridiculously excited about this arrangement ever since.

I made her months ago when the Bells of Ireland were blooming, but I’ve been saving her debut for spooky season.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks these flowers were practically MADE for Medusa.

Same dahlia. Very different look.

Copper Boy has changed so much in color over the season. It started out a deep burgundy-purple and has gradually shifted to more of a yellow-maroon blend.

Do you have a variety that changes a lot through the season?

If I could only grow 5 dahlias… these are the ones making the cut.

I have a feeling some of you are going to take this personally, but I’m prepared to defend my choices. 💪

Here’s my lineup:

Cafe Au Lait: Those enormous, creamy blush blooms make incredible focal flowers in arrangements. The soft, neutral coloring works with so many palettes, and you don’t need many stems to make a big impact.

Jessie G: A ball dahlia with excellent vase life. I love her in a moody arrangement, bringing that dark drama.

Cornell Bronze: A warm, coppery-orange ball dahlia that adds beautiful depth to fall arrangements. Its compact, rounded blooms are especially useful for adding shape and structure alongside larger, more open flowers.

Irish D Porter: This one is newer to me, and was one of my most prolific bloomers! The smaller flowers are incredibly versatile in bouquets, adding color and texture without overwhelming the other ingredients. It pairs beautifully with practically everything.

Pink Sylvia: Year after year, this dahlia produces more blooms AND tubers than any other variety in my garden. Add in its consistently strong stems, and it’s easily one of my most reliable and productive dahlias for cut flower.

The prettiest flower in your garden isn’t always the one you should cut! ✂️🌸

I harvested two cosmos from the SAME plant, on the SAME day. One was fully open and absolutely gorgeous. The other was just a cracked bud, barely starting to open.

The fully open flower started to shrivel by the next day. The cracked bud? It lasted an ENTIRE WEEK in the vase!

That’s a pretty big difference for something as simple as harvest timing.

And here’s the thing: every cut flower has its own ideal harvest stage. Some are best cut in bud, while others need to be much further along.

Knowing when to harvest can make such a difference in how long your flowers last!
