Something blue for this rainy Monday... but not at all dreary! This quaker turtle cross stitch was all done in a variegated thread that ranges between the two mat colors we chose. Though I've framed this pattern a few times before, it was the first time we tried an octagonal cut mat to mimic the shapes within. Don't tell the other stitchers, but this is my favorite framed quaker turtle yet!

An artist came in with three framed prints she no longer felt attached to. The frames themselves were a beautiful inlaid wood veneer. She asked if I could cut them down into smaller sizes, so I sat down and hammered out some math. At the end of the day, we turned 3 medium sized frames into 4- 11x14"s, one 6x6", and a bonus 4.5x6" All that was left were the little nubbins also pictured and a box full of shavings as I recut the corners to expose fresh wood for rejoining. It was satisfying to see so little waste, and to transform the old into new again. She provided 4 prints of her own original paintings to go int he 11x14"s, and will make custom cropped canvas prints for the smaller two on her own.

Artist name is Sissy Carroll. She shows her art in Georgetown Art Gallery.

Here is our repainted and refreshed "Voyage de Noces" aka Honeymoon, as you can see by the bride and groom.

The bright green frame I showed you all yesterday took a great transformation to a light aqua, reminiscent of the background. The original framer applied a super fun checkered pattern onto the accent frame before painting it green and we took advantage of that texture with a bit of gilders paste. A light coat of champagne silver to match the outer frame, and a second brushing on the interior edge of antique gold helps also tie it into the dark gold fillet. It's certainly a touch more elegant and a much lighter feel for our coastal living situation in Myrtle Beach.

Like I mentioned yesterday, the green works for a bold and whimsical approach! This is simply a different solution for a different feel coming from the same piece of artwork. Isn't framing fun and magical?!

Stay tuned for detail shots and bonus pics of this piece in it's new home!

What a great find! This original signed lithograph by Bolivian artist Graciela Rodo Boulanger titled "Voyage de Noces" came in to the shop after second hand purchase for a simple cleanup... You can see staples floating around between the mat and glass, and the glass was in desperate need of cleaning, inside and out.

The customer and I were enamored by the vintage gold fillet and the simplicity of the white matting, but we all felt a little shaken by this green frame...
It works for the piece, but it's just a little competitive with the art itself. In the interest of recycling and renewal, I offered to paint it.

It finally went home today. And I'll spoil the ending to say they loved it! But if you want to see how it transformed, I'm going to make you wait one more day. Any guesses on which direction we went with?
What's your thoughts on the green frame? Yay or Nay for your own taste?

This original charcoal drawing has been hibernating for decades, mounted in a single white mat and sandwiched between Masonite panels, waiting for the right moment to come out and be seen.
It was found by my friend's mom, going through her parents old things... obviously a memento from their time in Germany all those years ago. Besides a little yellowing of the paper and a little residue from the old masking tape that it was previously mounted with, it's in wonderful condition! With all fresh and archival materials, it should last for a long looooong time as it is now.

I did some sleuthing, and it looks like this is probably a drawing of Hotel Annahof near Niederwürzbach. Maybe they stayed there once upon a time! It looks like a beautiful place even today.

Happy Fr-EYE-day!!!

Lol, I could hear the eye roll from here... and I don't care. Corny jokes are better than a life without humor.

Can we all at least appreciate this piece of art?! This girl took the junk that rolled around the bottom of all of our high school backpacks: a multi pack of highlighters and a ballpoint pen and turned it into a higher artform. Applause is deserved! 👏👏👏

This is a companion to yesterday's piece:

Another piece of embroidered upholstery fabric, pinned and matted much like the cross stitches we frame.

I trimmed so many hanging and loose threads on this one... a machine can't check itself like all my hand-stitchers do! It's still pretty though.

Someone found this upholstery fabric and decided to turn it into art! Sure, it's machine embroidery, but the the texture and colors are still amazing! She let me dress it up in a matching silk mat for that similar shine. What a great vision and a fun piece!

A belated Happy Easter from your favorite framer!!! I thought about posting yesterday, but between two egg hunts, a big family dinner, and a full day of chasing our two little "rabbits" all over, there was no time to even open up Facebook. It's probably better that way, enjoying family while we can. I hope everyone else's holiday was just as wonderful!
