When I was little, I used to climb the carpet remnant mountain in the back of my grandfather’s carpet store. In 2004, my parents, Dan and Becky, started Top Floors right here in Suwanee. Now I work alongside them, and my kids tag along with me and help however they can (with a lot of giggling 😄).

A or B: which stain would you pick to match these stairs? Tell us in the comments before you swipe. 👇
This homeowner in Gwinnett was refinishing their red oak floors and wanted them to match the oak stairs and handrail. Stain A (Golden Oak) looked like the closer match that day. We walked them through why that wouldn’t last.
Stain samples go on raw, freshly sanded wood. The polyurethane finish goes on top, and it slowly ambers and yellows as it cures and ages. Red oak already runs warm, so a golden stain plus years of ambering adds up fast. Golden Oak would have ended up darker than the stairs. They chose B, Natural. It’s a little lighter on day one, and it will keep moving closer to the stairs instead of past them. Will it ever be a perfect match? No. Those stairs were finished years ago and may not even be the same wood. But it’ll be close enough that only the people who live there will know.
Picking a color is the part people worry about most. You don’t have to figure it out alone. We’ll put samples on your floor and talk you through how they’ll look in year five, not just day one.
