I’m excited (and a little nervous) to share that my mocs have been accepted into the Cherokee Homecoming Art Show. These ceramic baby moccasins honor my first year as a grandmother to my granddaughter Taytum. Her Cherokee name is "ᎠᏨᏗᏍᏗ ᎠᏲᎯᎭ", which means “She Brings the Light.” She was born on May 10, 2024, during a rare celestial event allowing the Northern Lights to be visible in Oklahoma. These moccasins represent the sacred journey of my grandchild’s first year, and my duty as her grandmother to help guide her along the path of Cherokee life.

Commemorating my granddaughter’s first snow walk by creating an ornament with her foot imprint.

In Cherokee culture we walk in the snow barefoot and wash our face with snow to bring health.

Doing something new today and making something contemporary. I keep wanting to carve southeast pottery symbols so it has a bit of Cherokee flair, but forcing my self to leave it be.

My sister and I just returned from a visit to NW Georgia, where our Cherokee ancestors lived on Chickamauga Creek. In 1835 a census of all Cherokees throughout our territories was taken prior to the Trail of Tears. The census lists heads of households by the waterway they lived near. I collected 20 lbs of wild clay that I will use to make traditional clay smudge pots as Christmas gifts for my family members.

The Battle at Chickamauga was the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War. There is a lot of trauma associated with the removal, but I am glad my ancestors were safe in Oklahoma by then, where only the edges of the war touched our new Nation. If not for the removal, would I exist here today to help carry on our traditions?

Fall is here which means it's time for Kanuchi --- a traditional Cherokee soup made from hickory nuts, but pecans can also be used when hickory nuts aren't available. The process involves shelling and grinding the nuts into a paste, forming them into balls, and storing them for later use. When ready to prepare the soup, the nut ball is boiled with water and salt until the oils emulsify, creating a creamy and flavorful base. The soup is often served with hominy, roasted sweet potatoes, or rice.

To sweeten the dish, some families add maple syrup, making it both a survival food and a treat. This warm, hearty dish has been passed down through generations and is especially popular in the fall and winter.

Kanuchi, or Kanvtsi, is a traditional Cherokee food made from hickory nuts. Originating as a survival meal, this dish is now a delicacy among Cherokees. Join...

So excited to see the photos of Nathalie wearing my new line of Cherokee clay bead jewelry. The beads are made from wild clay, pit-fired, and then dyed with black walnuts. I incorporate the use of copper for additional cultural significance.
