🚵♂️ 🔺️ E-Bike Safety & Our Store Policy - ✅ ️Parents Please Read
As e-bikes get more popular, we want to keep kids safe and keep everyone legal.
Our Policy: We do NOT sell e-bikes to children. A parent or legal guardian (18+) must be present and make the purchase. We want to make sure YOU know what your child is riding.
Let's Talk Speed - The Facts:
Most kids on a regular pedal bike can hit 15-20 mph on flat ground or downhill. That's it.
• Class 1 E-Bike: Pedal-assist ONLY, up to 20 mph. The motor stops helping at 20 mph.
• Class 2 E-Bike: Has a throttle + pedal-assist, still max 20 mph.
• Class 3 E-Bike: Pedal-assist ONLY, up to 28 mph. In Iowa, you must be 16 or older to operate a Class 3 and the bike must have a speedometer.
So a Class 1 or Class 2 does NOT go faster than a fit kid on a regular bike - it just helps them get to 20 mph easier, especially up hills.
What Is NOT Allowed on Town Roads:
Those electric dirt bikes / e-motos you see online (Sur-Ron, Talaria, etc.) are NOT e-bikes under Iowa law. They are considered motor vehicles / off-road motorcycles. They are not legal on city streets, sidewalks, or bike trails, require no license plate, no insurance = not street legal. They belong on private property / off-road parks only.
Our Safety Rules for Young Riders:
1. Helmet every ride. No exceptions. Under 18 should always wear one.
2. One rider per bike - e-bikes are not built for passengers.
3. Be seen: Front white light and rear red light/reflector, especially after dark. It's Iowa law. And all of our e-bikes have them.
4. Be predictable: Ride with traffic, obey stop signs/lights, use hand signals.
5. No headphones in both ears. You need to hear cars.
6. ABC Check before every ride: Air, Brakes, Chain.
7. Know where you can ride: In Iowa, e-bikes can be on roads and bike lanes. On bike paths/trails, obey posted limits - if no limit is posted, Class 3 must stay at or below 20 mph. Please also check with your local city regulations. E-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks in most towns.
We love e-bikes - they're fun, great for commuting to school and work, and keep kids active. But safety comes first. If you're a parent considering one, come talk to us. We'll fit your child correctly, explain the controls, and make sure you both leave confident.
