We have struggles as parents.
And when our babies become grown we see new struggles.
I knew that my older three kids had a 50/50 chance of inheriting a gene that contributes to addiction due to their father.
As a medical professional I can assure you addiction is usually not a choice. It is in their genes.
Where I live it is legal to give your kids alcohol. Knowing the possibilities I choose to use this to teach my kids how to drink safely. The rules were simple don’t hide it from me and only in the house.
Tis worked for the middle two kids.
I have known since my oldest was 16 that he had the gene. He was hiding alcohol in his room and throwing the empty bottles out the girls window. He would threaten his siblings to get them to not tell me. But of course mom always knows.
I tried to deal with it along with the horrid behaviors it brought. Nothing I did worked. I felt as a complete failure.
He ended up moving out at the age of 17 and moved in with his aunt.
His aunt on many occasions would tell me he was acting just like his father.
Now keep in mind he hadn’t seen his father since he was 2.
Now he is in the army and is 21. He is getting blackout drunk waking up in fields. He is hoping to come home when he gets out.
I have already made the decision that in order for him to come home he has to agree to a midnight curfew, no alcohol allowed in the house, and random drug test.
Before anyone says I’m wrong on these rules as he is a grown adult I still have child number 4 who is only 13 living at home.
Nurture does usually win over nature. But sometimes the genes of nature are too strong to be overcome by nurture.

Shield of Sisters is growing!

We’re excited to announce the FIRST meeting of our Texas Chapter on Tuesday, October 6 at 6 PM in Killeen, Texas.

Our chapters give sisters the opportunity to stay connected, build community, and continue supporting one another beyond the retreat.

You do not need to have previously attended a Shield of Sisters Retreat to attend a chapter meeting.

I have some of the best neighbors. While I’m out helping my scouts sell popcorn someone tried to steal a package. The neighbors across the street saw it happening on their security camera and managed to get the box back. It wasn’t anything expensive or important. But it was baggies to make my own pickle popsicles to keep the scout hydrated and some bake containers for a bake sale we have coming up. And I absolutely don’t have the money to replace them.
