A large Smoky Quartz from Dinkey Creek Mine, Dinkey Creek, Fresno County, California

Taken today in the 95° heat!

Measuring 8" long and 2.5" wide, this is an usually large specimen, most I've seen have been 4" or less. Most likely collected in the 70s sometime.

A nice little Benitoite specimen from San Benito county, California

Benitoite is a barium titanium silicate, which the combination of elements cause the blue tones. It has also been the state gemstone for California since 1985!

The largest crystal in the center measures 1.125 inches.

Sorting through bone chunk buckets from last summer, preparing for this year's dig season, and this small theropod digit popped out. Most likely from a Dromaeosaur, collected in the late Cretaceous Period Lance Formation of Eastern Wyoming.

Last night's display of the Aurora Borealis here in Templeton, California was incredible. Here are a couple of images I selected from the 50 or so I took last night. My favorite, and first one in this group, was when I turned the camera to overlook Creston, California and got this amazing display of color beams that lasted just a short few minutes. The second image in the set is what I was first presented with when I could see the lights looking north over Templeton.
