Frick artist Edgar Degas was born in 1834!

In celebration, we are taking a close look at a favorite of founder Henry Clay Frick, "The Rehearsal." This work was one of many compositions devoted to ballet that Degas produced in the 1870s and showcases his ongoing exploration of the human form through dance.

Today we are celebrating Rembrandt van Rijn, who was in 1606!

Of the many self-portraits painted, this is one of the most iconic. A veil of seeming wariness shadows the artist's face, which is blurred and scarred—by time, sorrow, and illness. Rembrandt was only fifty-two when he signed and dated this canvas, but it is almost as though he packed his entire life into the image, both what had gone before and what lay ahead.
