In this breakfast area, the existing cornice felt heavy and interrupted the windows, so we removed it and took a lighter, more tailored approach. Stationary drapery panels in a Stout fabric now frame the windows, paired with brushed brass French return hardware for a clean finish.

But one of the most important decisions was what we didn’t replace.

The existing cellular shades were already doing their job well, giving our client the privacy and light control they needed. Rather than replacing a functional product simply for the sake of making everything new, we designed the drapery to work with what was already there.

We also reupholstered the chair cushions and added a contrast welt that coordinates with the drapery—a smaller detail that helps the entire breakfast area feel considered and connected.

Good custom window treatment design is about looking at the room as a whole: what should stay, what should change, and how each selection needs to function for the client. That’s the kind of problem solving we bring to every project. 💕

A successful window treatment installation starts long before installation day.

Accurate measuring is one of the most important parts of our process, and it’s something our team handles for every full-service project. We’re not simply measuring the width and height of a window. We’re accounting for casing, mounting depth, ceiling height, hardware placement, projections, stack-back and any architectural details that could affect the finished treatment.

Those measurements inform everything that follows, from product specifications and fabrication to hardware and installation.

It’s one of the reasons we believe measuring should be left to the same professionals responsible for the finished project. When we manage the details from the beginning, we can make informed decisions along the way and help ensure everything fits and functions as intended.

The prettiest details still have to work. For this guest room, we specified a woven wood shade with room-darkening lining to provide better light control and privacy, then added custom banding made from a Carole linen fabric for a tailored finishing detail.

Function was equally important. The shade was designed with an offset clutch so the fabric stack wouldn’t interfere with operation of the chain—one of those small technical details that can make a significant difference in how a custom window treatment performs every day.

It’s a good example of what goes into designing the right treatment for a window: considering how it needs to look, how it needs to function, and the details required to make both happen.

Layered window treatments aren’t just a design decision. Sometimes, they’re the best way to solve several functional needs at once.

For this downtown Savannah guest room, we installed cordless relaxed Roman shades over the existing wood blinds. The blinds provide adjustable privacy and light control, while the fabric shades add another layer of light filtering and even help dampen some of the street noise below.

The bay window added another consideration. Getting three Roman shades to sit properly within the angles required exact measurements, and the existing blinds meant we needed additional projection. We mounted the shades on oversized boards to provide the necessary clearance while keeping the finished treatments aligned across the bay.

These are the details behind custom window treatments that aren’t always obvious once the project is complete. By layering treatments and accounting for the existing window conditions from the start, we were able to give this guest room greater control over light, privacy and comfort, without removing a treatment that was already serving a purpose.

Sometimes the best solution isn’t choosing one window treatment, it’s knowing how to make two work together.

This month, I said goodbye to our first Savannah home and started a new chapter that has been several years in the making.

Back in May, we had the unexpected opportunity to purchase a rambling old Savannah home...approximately two weeks after completing a full exterior renovation on our previous house. Because apparently finishing one renovation is the perfect time to start another. 😂

For years, I’ve been looking for the right property with the dream of restoring an older home and bringing her back to her former glory. This one is going to involve considerable renovations, and I am so excited about what’s ahead.

I already have plenty of ideas about what we’ll eventually be designing for the windows and the soft furnishings throughout the house, but there’s a lot to consider before we get there. As the house takes shape, I’m looking forward to sharing some of the process: the problem-solving, the design decisions, and undoubtedly a few surprises that come with renovating an old Savannah home.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I’ve dreamed about a project like this for a long time. I can’t wait to see where we end up. 💕

Cafe panels work because they solve a specific problem beautifully. You get privacy on the lower half of the window while light still comes through at the top. For kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or anywhere you want coverage without closing off the room, it's often the most thoughtful choice on the wall.

A few things that make these work beyond just the concept: scale matters. We use a small, petite pleat on cafe panels to keep everything in proportion with the overall size of the treatment. Side hems and bottom hems stay petite too—you don't want a big, heavy hem on a sweet, lightweight panel.

And fabric selection is everything. Cafes are typically unlined in a lightweight fabric, which means the material has to carry the look on its own.

On this Fripp Island new build, designer Dana Bacher selected two different fabrics for cafe curtains in different rooms. A neutral striped linen in the kitchen with those gorgeous marsh views, and a delicate block print in the scullery that adds just the right amount of pattern in a hardworking space.

Same treatment style, completely different character in each room.

Beautiful window treatments are only part of a successful project. How they function within the home matters just as much.

For this full-home project in Savannah’s Eastern Wharf, we partnered with interior designer Arlen Brown to design custom window treatments for a variety of conditions, from large arched openings and operational doors to spaces requiring privacy, light control and motorization.

In the living room, the architecture is a defining feature. The drapery needed to complement the scale and shape of the arched doors while maintaining access, preserving the river views and creating continuity with the rest of the home.

That level of detail starts well before fabrication. Throughout this project, decisions about hardware, drapery stack, motorization, lining and operation were made according to the needs of each individual space—not simply repeated from room to room.

It’s a great example of why we say every window requires a thoughtful approach.

A final check measure may not be the most glamorous part of a window treatment project, but it’s one of the steps that helps ensure installation day goes as planned.

Zoe and I were in Brunswick recently for a final check measure on a boutique multifamily project where we’re providing window treatments and custom hardware for built in bench nooks in several of the shared spaces.

On a project like this, we’re confirming more than window dimensions. We’re looking at the finished conditions, verifying that what was planned aligns with what was built, and checking the details that will affect fabrication, hardware and installation.

Construction projects evolve, and even small changes in the field can have an impact on a custom product. Taking the time to check measure before fabrication allows us to catch those details now, rather than on installation day.

It’s one of the less visible parts of our process, but an important one. Measure, verify, then fabricate.

Choosing a woven wood shade is only part of the decision. The lining you choose can completely change how that shade functions in your home.

Here’s how we help our clients think through the options:

Unlined → Allows you to see more of the natural weave and lets light pass through—best for spaces where privacy isn’t a priority.

Light-filtering → Adds a layer of privacy while still allowing soft, natural light into the room.

Room-darkening → Provides greater light control, making it a smart choice for bedrooms and media rooms. One detail to know: you’ll still have some light leakage along the sides, as shown here. That’s normal with this style of shade.

There isn’t one lining that’s “best” for every window. The right choice depends on the room, the amount of privacy and light control you need, and how you want the shade to function day to day.

These are the details we walk through with our clients before anything is ordered, because a beautiful window treatment should also work beautifully for the way you live.
