The pottery program is a great place to get started learning about making pottery, or to hone your existing skills even further. Whatever your experience level, you can learn and have fun at Tucker Rec. Our pottery studio is a place to come and unwind, find fellowship, and/or find your quiet place to get into the Zen of clay work. We respect every person in the studio, and we want to create and ma
intain a friendly, peaceful, and supportive atmosphere for all. For that reason, we don’t delve into politics, religion, or other potentially contentious areas; there are plenty of other places out there in the world to deal with those topics. We want to have fun venturing into our own creative natures with others who desire to do the same thing. You must be 18 years old to participate in adult classes. Local ceramic artist and ceramics instructor, John Gresens , is the new studio manager. Please reach out to him at the numbers below for details on class offerings. The Kid's Class is held on Saturday morning and is taught by Maria Ciavarro. The kids make their pottery creations by hand building with the clay. Hand building is simply making pottery without using a potter’s wheel, however the instructor may allow some kids to use the wheel at her discretion. The kids learn to make pots using different methods; pinch, coil, and slab construction. Then they learn to combine those different methods into one piece. There is no limit to what they can create! Students may only use clay that is provided by Tucker Rec. Pottery Studio, no outside clay is allowed. The class sessions are generally 8 weeks long, and the cost depends on the length of the session. The fee includes the cost of instruction, 25 # of clay, use of tools and equipment, glazes, and all firings. We meet in adjoining rooms 4 and 6 in the Tucker Recreation Center on the gymnasium hallway. We have provided the Pottery Badge workshop for Girl Scouts in the past. We follow the GS workbook of listed requirements for obtaining the badge. It takes two days, and we typically do it on two Saturdays, two weeks apart. On the first Saturday the Scouts come in and get oriented to the studio. They end up learning three techniques for working in clay; pinch pots, coil pots, and slab projects. They make their pots on the first Saturday. Then the pots have to dry, and be fired the first time. On the second Saturday, the Scouts return to glaze their pots. Their pots will be fired for the second time, and when complete, we will notify you that it is time to pick up the pots. We charge $35 per Scout which includes, instruction, clay, the use of tools, glazes and both firings. We have a Saturday Kid’s Class, so we typically hold this class between 12 noon and 3 pm on Saturdays.
