Some rugs really don't understand personal space.

1059 is nearly ten feet of midnight blue, faded pink and the kind of wear you can't manufacture. Give it a hallway and apparently it takes the whole damn thing.

4'1" × 9'8". Antique Hamadan.

Rug 1006 is making a fairly convincing argument for rearranging the room.
Deep indigo, two oversized medallions, flashes of turquoise, and the kind of wear that only makes the whole thing better.
Currently $920, down from $1,150 through September 12.

Well, this seems like a reasonable time to make a bad decision.

Our Labor Day sale is live.

Every rug at RugSnob is 20% off through September 12—including this completely restrained little number, Rug 1037.

Eleven and a half feet of red, cobalt, green, yellow, ivory, pink and whatever else the weaver could apparently get their hands on. There is a lot happening here. I mean that as a compliment.

Normally $2,950. This week, $2,360.

That's $590 you can spend explaining to someone why you absolutely needed an antique runner.

20% off sitewide through September 12. Free shipping, always.

Some old rugs are very serious. This one has other plans.

Rug 1070 is barely 2'2" × 2'10", and somehow it managed to fit coral pink, teal blue, oxblood, mustard, olive, ivory and about seventeen different ideas into three square feet.

The closer you look, the stranger it gets.

Flowers turn into hooks. Stems take hard left turns. Little shapes appear along the edges that I'm not entirely convinced are flowers at all.

And that pink field.

Antique rugs this small are easy to treat like accessories. This one has enough personality to boss around an entire room.

The orange got me.

Baluch rugs tend to live in a pretty moody world—deep indigo, red-browns, ivory and earthy colors.

Rug 1017 apparently didn't get the memo.

Look around the border. Those almost electric orange stars aren't behaving like quiet little accents. They keep circling the rug, then the color sneaks inward again through the guard border and flashes inside a handful of the central motifs.

Put that against all that blue-black indigo, plum, burgundy and brown and the orange practically glows.

Then look closer.

The stars change slightly. The geometry wanders. Colors shift from one section to the next. Nothing has the sterile repetition you'd get from something designed on a screen. Someone made these decisions at a loom, by hand, a very long time ago.

That's the stuff I can't stop looking at.

Tree of Life. No green thumb required.

You could spend a while getting lost in this one. Birds, branches, blossoms, little geometric detours — there’s something new every time your eye moves across it.

And the wear is exactly where it should be. A little faded, a little uneven, and very clearly not made yesterday.

Wait. Are those horses?

One of my favorite things about old rugs is noticing the stuff you completely miss the first time you look at them.

Tiny figures. Odd little animals. A border that changes its mind halfway through. Something woven slightly crooked because a human being made it.

Perfect is easy to reproduce.

This isn’t.
