The right area rug can create the perfect foundation to transform an entire room! One of the biggest factors in choosing a rug isn’t just the size, style, or color… it’s how it’s made.

Machine-Made Rugs:
Starting around $1,000
Made by automated looms using mostly synthetic fibers. These rugs are durable, stain-resistant, and a great value for busy households. They’re also a wonderful option for clients who like to refresh their spaces more often.

Hand-Tufted Rugs:
Typically $2,000–4,000
Crafted by artisans using a tufting tool, usually with wool. They are soft, textured, and a beautiful balance of quality and value – perfect for creating a cozy feel with timeless style.

Hand-Knotted Rugs:
Starting around $5,000+

Let’s talk lighting because the right lamp can completely change a room!

One of the best ways to narrow down your choices is by focusing on size. Even the most beautiful lamp can feel out of place if the proportions aren’t right. Here are three designer rule of thumbs to consider:

1 - Next to a sofa, chair, or bed, aim for a lamp that’s 25–30” tall for comfortable reading and balanced proportions.

2 - On a console or cabinet, look for a combined height of 60–66” from the floor to the top of the lamp. For example, a 30” console pairs beautifully with a 30–36” lamp.

3 - Don’t forget the shade! The shade should be slightly narrower than the depth of the furniture so it doesn’t feel oversized or extend past the edges.

These are simple guidelines, but getting the proportions right is what makes a room feel balanced, polished, and thoughtfully designed. Sometimes the best transformations begin with one simple request: “I’m ready for color.” 💙

In this design, Michelle Harrison used the fun stripe wallpaper as the starting point for everything else. She layered in rich navy walls, soft textures, warm brass, and beautiful blues to create a master retreat that feels cheerful, cozy, and welcoming.

One of the biggest misconceptions about using color is that it has to feel overwhelming. When it’s layered thoughtfully, it can actually feel quite timeless.
