Have you noticed that the walls in art museums aren’t always white? The paint colors are curated as backdrops for the art, specifically selected to complement the art and enhance the mood the art is intended to impart. You can do the same thing in your home. This dark living room gets inconsistent, weak light throughout the day. The solution included bold art, a big blue couch to anchor the space, and repainting the off-white walls (shown) with a rich, saturated paint color to enhance the decor.

This recent color consultation was one of my favorite experiences. Robin knew she wanted something bold and blue. The challenge was to find a saturated color that didn’t feel too immature.

We nailed it.

The key, as always, is in color relationships.

The trim is actually a soft blue, which provides a nice transition to the white windows. If we had selected a true white trim, this blue would look elementary.

The final look is powerful, yet natural, just like the vast sky behind it. Here’s her testimonial:

Never trust digital color swatches! 🎨 Look how different these colors appear outside at my client’s home compared to the Sherwin-Williams website.

We were aiming for a blue house and needed a saturated hue that wouldn’t disappear in the shadows out front. What makes this tricky is bold blues can easily feel too juvenile or dated.

A soft bluish gray trim (a color no one would expect for trim) perfectly bridges the blue siding and white windows. Add a bold blue back porch floor, and suddenly the whole palette feels fresh, surprising, and grounded.

Please don’t paint over your brick. Paint adjacent siding and trim with a color with the same undertone as the grout. The greenish-grays shown here are a great option. Walk around your house and hold swatches vertically. Colors shift depending on light. These looked blue in the backyard under mid-day cool sunshine, and greener in the front yard under the shade of trees.

Soothing, natural tones for a space that does it all.

This dining room doubles as a craft space and a wine-sipping escape—so we chose a calming, grounded palette to support both creativity and relaxation. We worked with the existing off-white walls and new countertop install to create a cohesive look that ties the whole house together.
