2025.10.29 mobile base for jointer
I have a 20+ year old 6" jointer, it is very heavy and needed a base so I could move it when needed.
I, like many woodworkers I believe, scavenge spare wood when they see it in their travels. I found a piece of what I think is industrial framing timber. It looks like really thick plywood but is exceptionally strong. It is about 10" wide by 3" thick, and I think it is great for this usage as the framing for this base.
I used 3/4" plywood and cut the framing pieces to about 4". I rabbeted a 3/4" slot in the middle of the framing and screwed together the frame at the corners. I forgot to get a picture, but I added an additional piece of the framing underneath lengthwise. Each of the legs, when the wheels are retracted, sit on top of a layer of plywood and the framing lumber.
My father would say that I built it so that it would survive an airdrop. Maybe, but it does do the job, and I can now easily move the jointer when needed.
