Barefoot on the floor, surrounded by my cyanotypes, and I couldn’t be more proud of this work 💙

I spend so much quality time in nature, gathering palm fronds, monstera, ferns, and tiny flowers to bring back to my studio. I love designing each piece and arranging the leaves to tell the story of how they move naturally, swaying in the wind and flowing like water.

Creating a cyanotype is a step-by-step process. First, I mix a light-sensitive solution by hand and brush it onto paper. Then I arrange my leaves and flowers on top. Next, the sun does its work. Finally, I wash it in water and watch the image appear. That moment still gives me chills.

I’m also obsessed with all the tones of blue this process creates. Soft sky blue, electric cobalt, deep indigo, even hints of teal and green. No two pieces are ever the same.

Thank you so much for all the love, Jane! I absolutely love how these pieces look in your home 💙

This pair of cyanotypes was made to flow together. Sweeping palm fronds and delicate flowers move from one piece to the next, set in clean white frames. What makes them extra special is the color. Deep blues blend into rich forest green, a tone that’s really hard for me to get. I love when it happens!

Right now I’m in Bangkok and so excited to be part of the Dynamite Circle community. I’ve been having such great conversations with incredible people, and I’m feeling so inspired.

On my way to Bangkok for the first time! I’m heading to DCBKK, the annual Bangkok conference for Dynamite Circle. It’s a community of over 1,400 founders from around the world who run their businesses remotely. A few days of workshops, keynote speakers, and masterminds, plus great food and even better people.

For years I’ve loved being a traveling artist, driving across the US and showing my work at fine art festivals. Those festivals helped build my career, and I’m so grateful for every person I’ve met along the way. Now I’m ready for the next chapter: growing my digital footprint. My goals for this trip are to learn how to run online ads and build a business that relies less on travel, so I can spend more quality time with my husband.

This piece was created on fabric, a medium I’m diving deeper into this season. I’ve made a few fabric pieces before, but now I’m focusing on creating more work on organic cotton. Fabric lets me create pieces in a whole range of sizes, beyond the traditional sizes I make on paper.

I mean… would you look at it? Just look at it. Isn’t it beautiful?

This is Petrea, also called Purple Wreath, and it grows right in my garden. The flowers start out a soft, delicate purple, then slowly dry to brown with a thick, sturdy texture.

It’s my favorite flower to use in my cyanotypes, and people love calling them little starfish 💜

Nothing makes me feel more alive than gearing up for my next backpacking trip, hiking shoes on and a beautiful trail in front of me.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I got to share that passion together. We started in the Swiss Alps (the first two photos), then flew to Albania to hike from Valbona over the pass to Theth (all the rest). Jagged peaks, wild glacial valleys, and ancient trails through some of the most remote, untouched mountains I’ve ever seen. Legs burning, hearts pounding, and every climb worth it the second we reached the top.

After a full day on the trail, we’d arrive at a cozy mountain guesthouse, tired and happy, for a hot shower, a delicious meal, and a cold b**r or glass of w**e. This is the kind of travel I love most. Out here, I feel the most like myself.

Trips like this are what fuel my cyanotypes: new landscapes, the people I meet, their culture, and their food. Movement is everything to me, in my life and in my art. I love pushing my body, and I love watching how nature moves, the way leaves sway in the wind and water flows. That’s why so much of my work feels a little abstract. It’s my way of capturing that movement and the feeling of being truly alive.

I love laying all my pieces out on the table and comparing all the different shades of blue 💙

Blue has a way of making people feel calm and at peace. It reminds us of the sky and the ocean.

One of my favorite moments is when someone who truly loves blue walks into my art booth. Their face lights up when they see every tone of blue all in one place.

Standing proud with this giant elephant ear leaf!

All of my artwork starts out in nature. I collect leaves like this one and bring them back to my studio, where real sunlight turns them into cyanotypes.

Turning these moments into art is my greatest passion

Meet this lovely couple who took a piece home with them this summer at the Des Moines Arts Festival 💙

I’m always so grateful for all the incredible people I’ve met over the years as a traveling artist.

There are so many steps behind every piece. Creating the artwork, framing it, then driving across the country to set up my booth and meet all of you. Every step is worth it, and I love it all so much.

I truly love what I do every day, and I’m beyond grateful 🙏

I’ve been back in my studio for two weeks, and the sun has been shining every day ☀️ No rain means I get to create lots of new work on both fabric and watercolor paper!

All of my cyanotypes are made with real sunlight and chemicals I mix by hand. I coat the surface with a light-sensitive solution, lay plants on top, and let the sun do the rest. Where the light hits, it turns deep blue. Where the plants block it, white shapes stay behind. One rinse in water and the print is revealed 💙

This season I’m focusing on creating more pieces on organic cotton. I love watercolor paper, and those pieces are finished in custom frames with glass. My fabric pieces are stretched instead, with no glass, which gives them a completely different look. Working with fabric also allows me to create much larger pieces.

This piece was created today with a giant fern 🌿 It sits right at the center of the composition and fills the whole piece. The blues are so electric, shifting from deep indigo to bright cobalt to soft sky blue, with hints of sage green glowing through. I really love how it turned out.

Every cyanotype I create is made using real leaves.

I’m always looking at the different shapes and details of the plants around me and imagining how they might translate into my artwork. Sometimes that means carrying something much bigger than me all the way back to my studio.

I collect botanicals from places I visit around the world, then dry and preserve them until I’m ready to use them. Each one holds a memory of where I found it and eventually becomes part of a one-of-a-kind piece created with sunlight.
