Ostara, celebrated around March 19-23 , marks the Spring Equinox —a time of perfect balance between day and night, light and dark. 🌞🌙 This festival, rooted in earth-based religions, honors the renewal of life, fertility, and new beginnings as the Earth awakens from winter’s slumber. 🌿✨
Ostara and Easter are celebrated around the same time of year and carry much of the same symbolism.
The name Ostara is believed to come from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, fertility, and rebirth (yes, the same inspiration for Easter 🐰🥚). Ancient celebrations honored her with eggs, hares, and fresh blooms —all symbols of fertility and growth. It is said Eostre wanted to save a frozen bird she loved and turned it into a rabbit to give it new life and the rabbit was able to continue having eggs.. ergo Eostre's eggs.
The English word Easter, which parallels the German word Ostern, is of uncertain origin. One view, expounded by the Venerable Bede in the 8th century, was that it derived from Eostre, or Eostrae, an Anglo-Saxon goddess possibly associated with spring and fertility. (From Brittanica dot com)
