Purpleheart is such a cool wood. When the sun hits it, you just get this impossibly vibrant, wine-colored piece of wood, that's just naturally that color, no die or stain used. This piece was inspired by a few things: tree of life designs, the tree that protects those below; a fantasy book I was reading at the time, that had illusion-wielding purple foxes, and of course, the alaskan landscape.

Another slight throwback; I was experimenting with multi-layered compositions, using padouk and walnut to highlight just how tall and imposing the mountains are around Valdez, and then decided to add a pen holding feature. . This one I kept for my personal use; it still sits on my desk as my penholder, because what's the point of being able to make really cool items if you aren't going to use some of them.

A sneak peek at my new, travel sized cribbage board design; the hinges and locks haven't arrived yet, but this one is of Columbia glacier, big enough to hold a deck of cards inside the two wooden pieces, but small enough to travel with. A full batch is under production, with the kinks ironed out; look out for these for sale soon.

A quite successful experiment; I took a new design that hadn't cut cleanly, and on a whim, poured resin over it. Once it set, I planed it down flush, giving that nice color contrast. I'm definitely going to be using this technique more; this disk was sold within an hour of being revealed to the public at the Valdez Fly in.

This was the first cribbage board that I made, after beloved friends, the Shidners, asked me make them one. The cribbage track follows the path the glaciers have carved through the spectacular mountains, coming down the Root glacier, looping around the town of McCarthy, and racing back up the Kennikott. I truly love these mountains, this landscape, and these people, so this board was an honor to make.

Alright, it's time to start regularly sharing some of my work. Let's start things off with a banger; this is the iconic drive into McCarthy through Wrangell-St. Elias, immortalized for my former boss and friend Rebecca. Four different kinds of wood form a triptych, the four seasons of the Wranglles moving through the park, with the Copper River and its tributaries uniting them.
