June 20: National Vanilla Milkshake Day

This frosty drink didn't begin with those three ingredients, though. In 1885, the term "milkshake" showed up in print for the first time. The concoction of cream, eggs, and whiskey was often served with other alcoholic tonics such as lemonades and soda waters.

By 1900, a milkshake often referred to "wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla syrups." In these frothy beverages, ice cream was nowhere to be found. However, a few years later in the early 1900s, people began asking for this new treat with a scoop of ice cream. By the 1930s, malt shops were serving milkshakes all over the United States.

June 19 - National Dry Martini Day

This adult beverage has grown to become one of the best-known mixed drinks. A traditional or perfect Martini is made with equal parts gin and vermouth. For anyone who has never had a Martini, we have a list of terms to help get you started.

Martini Lingo
Dirty - This Martini includes olive brine or juice from the olive jar.
Dry - The vermouth is decreased significantly in the Martini, and gin becomes the primary spirit. Extra dry tips the ratio even further.
Gibson - Instead of an olive, bartenders garnish the Martini with a pickled onion.
Shaken vs. Stirred - Most bartenders will tell you that the better Martini is stirred. Shaken Martinis tend to be inferior due to a couple of reasons - ice chips water down the drink, and shaking the Martini adds air to the cocktail. A stirred Martini results in a smoother, fuller experience.
Straight Up - This Martini may be either shaken or stirred, but it is strained and served without ice - the opposite of a Martini on the rocks.
Smoky or Burnt - Scotch whisky replaces the vermouth in this Martini. A twist of lemon garnishes the glass.
Wet - Where the dry Martini has less vermouth, this one has more.
With a Twist - The bartender adds a thin strip of citrus peel to the Martini as a garnish or in the drink.

Chocolate-Raspberry Martinis

How sweet it is! This rich, velvety drink is dessert in a glass.

Ingredients
1 1/3 cups (325 mL) half and half
1 cup (250 mL) semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 container (10 oz) frozen raspberries in syrup, thawed
6 oz (175 g) raspberry-flavored vodka, divided
2 cups (500 mL) ice, divided
Fresh raspberries and mint sprigs (optional)
Directions
Place half and half in Classic Batter Bowl; microwave, uncovered, on HIGH 60-90 seconds or until beginning to simmer. Add chocolate morsels; whisk using Stainless Whisk until smooth. Pour half of the chocolate mixture into Shaker.

Strain raspberries using (5-in./13-cm) Strainer into Small Batter Bowl, pressing with Ladle to measure 2/3 cup (150 mL) juice. (Discard seeds.) Using jigger to measure, add 3 oz (90 g) of the vodka, 1/3 cup (75 mL) of the raspberry juice and 1 cup (250 mL) of the ice to Shaker. Secure lid on Shaker; shake vigorously 1-2 minutes or until ice is almost melted and mixture is smooth. Divide martinis evenly among three Martini Glasses.

Pour remaining chocolate mixture, vodka, raspberry juice and ice into Shaker; shake and serve in three additional Martini Glasses as directed above. Garnish with raspberries, if desired.

June 18 - International Sushi Day

International Sushi Day, observed each year on June 18th, celebrates sushi and encourages people around the world to enjoy it. Established in 2009, the day invites everyone to explore different styles - from traditional nigiri to creative modern rolls - and to appreciate Japanese culinary culture. It’s widely marked by dining out, making sushi at home, and recognizing the skill and artistry behind its preparation.

Homemade California Roll
Prep 5 min | Ready in 15 min

This simple roll makes sushi night feel doable and fun, giving you fresh flavor and a little “look what I made” moment in your own kitchen.

Ingredients
Sushi Rice
1 tbsp (15 mL) rice vinegar
1 tbsp (15 mL) sugar
¼ tsp (1 mL) salt
1 cup (250 mL) cooked short grain white rice (sushi rice) or long grain white rice, warm (see cook’s tip)
Rolls
Oil for greasing
2 sticks imitation crab meat, thinly sliced (see cook’s tip)
½ avocado, thinly sliced
¼ seedless cucumber, cut into matchsticks
1 sheet nori seaweed
Optional Toppings: Everything Bagel Seasoning (or toasted sesame seeds), soy sauce
Directions
Combine the vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until the salt and sugar are completely dissolved. Drizzle the vinegar mixture over the rice in a large bowl and stir gently to coat. Cool to room temperature.
Lightly grease the barrel and plunger of the Easy Roll Maker.
Fill both sides of the barrel with sushi rice, then press the plunger into both sides to make space for fillings.
Add your fillings evenly along the divots.
Reattach the plunger, close and latch the barrel, then lock on the end cap.
Turn the plunger until it’s past the threads, then gently press until you feel resistance.
Place a sheet of nori (shiny side down) on a cutting board and press the rice roll onto it, aligning the ends.
Roll up the nori, sealing the edge with a little water.
Let it rest a few minutes to soften the nori, then slice into 8–12 pieces.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with soy sauce, if you’d like.

U.S. nutrients per serving: Calories 260, Total Fat 8g, Saturated Fat 1 g, Cholesterol 10 mg, Sodium 560 mg, Carbohydrate 41 g, Fiber 4 g, Sugars 10 g (includes 6 g added sugar), Protein 7 g

Cook's Tips:
Traditional sushi rice is made from Japanese short‑grain rice. It’s stickier and holds its shape in a roll better than standard long-grain white rice. Both will work in this recipe, but sushi rice will give you the best results.

You’ll sometimes see imitation crab meat sold as surimi or crab-flavored fish.
