FEATURED ARTISTS – Icons, Collagraphs, and Collages: Three 20th-century Artists
This post is different from previous ones because it is a photo essay on artists by whom I do not have works currently for sale. They are artists whom I am interested in, whom I have researched, and who have in common important aspects of their personal histories and artistic careers. I will introduce the artists in the first photo. The threads that tie them together are that they are members of religious or ethnic minorities who have historically been the victims of discriminatory practices and persecution. Each experienced significant changes of place during his life, but eventually found peace and freedom to pursue his art, ultimately receiving acceptance as a person and acclaim as an artist. Each in his own way honored women and mothers in his work.

FEATURED PAINTING – American Family Watercolor, 1800
This post is about a watercolor painting that I recently hung in the pink booth at Abigail’s Linen Press. I have been researching it for several months and would like to relate some of the interesting topics I have explored. Photo montages and text by Abigail’s Linen Press. A complete research report with photo credits and references will accompany the painting.

FEATURED PAINTINGS – Dutch Winter Landscapes
This post is about two large, 20th-century oil paintings, both in the style of 17th-century Dutch winter landscapes. They are similar not only in the appearance of stylistic icons, such as a windmill and ice skaters, but both artists, about whom very little is known, are involved in mysteries related to their identity and their names.

FEATURED PRINTS - Charleston Steeples
This post is about a pair of small, framed prints, made by Charleston, SC, artist Elizabeth O’Neill Verner around 1930. Verner was well known in Charleston for her involvement in the city’s historic preservation, for her prodigious output of oil paintings, prints, and pastels, and for her advocacy of the rights of women street vendors in Charleston. She was also the author of several books highlighting the history and sights of the city. The prints picture the tall steeples of Charleston’s oldest churches, St. Philip’s, founded in 1680, and St. Michael’s, established in 1751. These churches’ majestic edifices are not only National Historic Landmarks, they are also symbols of hope and endurance to the people of a city that has maintained its beauty and charm in spite of centuries of destructive wars, deadly plagues, and extreme natural disasters.

Faced with the usual dilemma of limiting the items included in a post, I simply selected my favorites from the large collection of Asian objects now on display at Abigail’s Linen Press. Included are several figures and some unusual jars, vases, and other objects.

From childhood, we are fascinated by small places to keep our treasures: shoeboxes, jewelry chests, junk drawers, etc. This post is about a collection of small decorative and useful boxes currently in a showcase display at Abigail’s Linen Press. What makes them interesting are their many shapes and materials. It’s fun to imagine what treasures they might have held.
Text, box photos, and photo collages by Abigail’s Linen Press. I photographed the boxes in groups, but decided to describe only the more unusual ones, so in some of the pictures, you may notice all or part of boxes that are not described. If you would like more information about any of the boxes you see, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Additional image credits available upon request.

This post spotlights a small collection of African objects currently on display in a mirrored cabinet at Abigail’s Linen Press. The items represent crafts practiced in various parts of Africa. The background of the photos is a kantha quilt, probably actually made in India, not Africa, but expressing the style of textile patterns commonly seen in Africa. The wooden platform used in some of the photos is a very weathered and rickety, three-legged milking stool. I hope this brief introduction will inspire you to learn more about the creativity and artisanry of African craft makers.

This post is about a small, color intaglio print that I found and had framed in 2020. It is a picture of a notorious, 530-year-old palazzo on the Grand Canal in Venice, etched in the mid 1960s by an American woman artist. As I studied it, an interesting story unfolded, revealed in many fascinating photos and works of art.

This post is about a lithograph print of a pretty Tuscan villa, printed in Paris shortly after the 1867 Exposition Universelle. An interesting fact about it is that it was printed in color very early in the development of color lithography by the Paris printer leading the way in implementing new lithographic technology.

Last Christmas, with all the unusual limitations on businesses and social activities, I was not able to display a nativity print I had recently acquired. It is now framed and ready to hang. I have spent several weeks exploring its more than 500-year history. Not every piece of the puzzle has clicked into place, but I have learned enough to confidently share its story.
