Today, I visited city hall to inquire about the city ordinance for the downtown district. After greeting the staff member at the counter, I asked her to direct me to the specific ordinance I would need if I wanted to open a business downtown. She asked me about the nature of my business, and I tried to explained that I currently operate from another location but am considering downtown. When she asked for the name of my business, I told her it’s called Sip Design Unwind.
At that point, she mentioned that I had been reported for selling alcohol without a license and that the previous staff member had given me incorrect information about the ordinance. I listened to her and then politely asked if I could respond. I clarified that I have never sold alcohol to anyone, as I respect the law, which is why I’m here in the first place. I asked if the word "Sip" made her think of alcohol because my senior clients sip coffee, the kids sip juice, and the adults sip sparkling water. She then said that it was the way I had advertised my business on Facebook that raised concerns. I found this amusing because I rarely advertise or post on Facebook.
Now that I’m aware my page is being monitored, I feel this is the right place to address the situation. First of all, you chose to work in public service. When a citizen asks a question, there’s no need to treat them like a criminal. You acted as though I wasn’t an adult simply seeking information. Because of your assumptions, you missed that I wasn’t even inquiring about the "Sip and Paint" aspect of my business. I was actually looking for information on the city ordinance for downtown because I’m considering purchasing a building and beginning the process of developing my business plan. Shame on you for not giving me the opportunity to communicate that to you.
I knew the ordinance was available online before I came in, but I wanted to ensure I had the correct one for the downtown district. I understand that not everyone has manners, and because of that I feel the need to introduce myself. My name is Denise Jordan, and I am a law-abiding citizen of Toombs County. I give back to my community by dedicating my time and resources to the elderly and youth in our area. Please Scroll down my page and you will see that.
I feel that customer service skills are seriously lacking in many businesses, and apparently, City Hall is no exception.
