Dragonflies may look delicate, with their glassy wings and jewel-colored bodies, but they are some of nature’s most efficient mosquito hunters. These tiny aerial predators patrol ponds, wetlands, gardens, and backyards with incredible speed and precision, snatching mosquitoes and other small flying insects right out of the air. A single dragonfly is often said to eat dozens of mosquitoes in a day, with some estimates reaching up to 100, making it one of the most useful natural pest controllers flying around us. Even before they become adults, dragonfly young live underwater as fierce little predators, feeding on mosquito larvae before those mosquitoes ever get the chance to fly. So the next time a dragonfly darts past you near the water, it is not just a beautiful insect passing by — it is a tiny hunter helping keep the mosquito population in check.

Too funny
