Per usual, great information from our friends at Iowa State Extension Yard and Garden !

While most perennials are best divided in early spring, late summer/early fall (September in Iowa) is a good time to dig and divide peony, daylily, garden phlox, hosta, lungwort, ornamental onion, and hardy geranium.

Late summer/early fall division gives the plants several weeks to get re-established in the landscape before winter. Perennials divided at this time should be mulched with several inches of straw or pine needles in mid to late November. Mulching helps prevent repeated freezing and thawing of the soil (during the winter months) that can heave plants out of the soil.

See this extensive list for the best times to divide other perennials: https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/how-divide-and-transplant-perennials

It's time for the great Sac County Fair! We love the fair and the vehicle it provides to youth and families for leadership, affirmation and growth! Congrats and good luck to this year's exhibitors and hats off to the busy volunteers of the Fair Board, Extension staff, Extension Council members, parents and supporters. Enjoy the fair (and please water our planters if you happen to lean up against one). Huge shout-out to the Jackson's 4H Club for keeping the planters watered all this spring and summer! ❤️

As we approach the great Sac County Fair, we wanted to give a shout-out and sincere thanks to the Jacksons 4-H Club! This crew of young people have kept the planters at the fairgrounds watered all summer and they look amazing! Service looks different to many audiences. In this case, their gift of time was HUGE to us, but may be small to others. Good luck to the Jacksons and all exhibitors at this year's fair! ..also, if you're at the fairgrounds and the flowers look a little parched, go ahead and dump some water on them for us. 😉

Congrats to the Fair Board members, 4-H and FFA youth exhibitors (including their MVP parents), Extension staff and volunteers on a great Ida County Fair! We love supporting our local fairs - and appreciate they provide valuable learning experiences, recognition and community connection -'especially in our corner of the World. This year we were especially proud of one of our favorite Ida County residents - Ivy was super excited earned her first purple ribbon at the fair!

Check it out, friends! This is a great way to show off your hard work this season.
