I created this mini-quilt, “Wooly Knolls,” using “Wee Sheep and Rolling Fields” fabric by Irish Viking Designs. I added rich texture to this charming landscape design by hand-embroidering the sheep with fluffy French knots, accentuating the knolls with an outline stitch, and filling the vibrant cottage doors with a dense satin stitch. The three-dimensional thatched roofs are uniquely composed of natural reeds repurposed from a whisk broom.

This quilt, “Tidal Whirl”, emerged from a collection of half-square triangle remnants saved from earlier quilts I made with batik fabrics in shades of blue and green. Rather than discarding these fragments, I was drawn to reassemble them into something cohesive—allowing past projects to inform a new visual narrative.

My affinity for these colors reflects a long-standing connection to the sea. The palette—ranging from deep ocean blues to lighter, shifting aquas—guided both the composition and the emotional tone of the piece.

In exploring the versatility of half-square triangles, I experimented with multiple layouts before settling on pinwheel centers rendered in solid fabrics. These centers anchor the design, while elongated triangle formations in patterned batiks extend outward, interlocking across the surface. This structure creates a sense of continuous movement, echoing the rhythm and energy of ocean currents.

The title, “Tidal Whirl”, was inspired during a reflective stage of the process. It captures both the dynamic motion within the quilt and its connection to the sea—embodying a sense of force, flow, and natural harmony.

Caveat: I used ChatGPT to enhance my description of the quilt and for name suggestions.
