Fall Friday in Fauquier County, Virginia. Had to stop and take a couple of shots from a country bridge with my iPhone this afternoon as I headed home from an initial visit to a new project in Middleburg. The air was sweet and crisp, the sun was warm, and the shadows were long and low. Tha aura of autumn was all around me. How fortunate I am to live and work in this bucolic corner of the world. Swipe far left to see the view from the other side of the bridge. Cheers to a beautiful October weekend my friends. — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/De2kcQPnxhz/

Nantucket by night on an October evening. Tucked quietly behind the larger library of our latest project on the island, the cozy gentleman’s study is even more inviting with a crackling fire in the simple but handsome fireplace. We love the custom parchment and iron desk at the room’s center, and the array of brass lighting…both from our friends at …and the plush sofa. The exquisite abstract over the mantle was the final piece of this aesthetic puzzle. Kismet! All fabrics, trims and wallpaper here from our collection with and paints from our color collection with . Dark and stormy outside this Sunday morning…but all is bright and beautiful inside with these cheery dahlias at our bar in the butler’s pantry. So glad we harvested these yesterday morning when the weather was more pleasant. These beauties look deceptively small in the first image. Swipe left to see the amazonian scale of these delightful “dinner plates” in my hand as I was arranging flowers Saturday afternoon. Wishing all a bright and beautiful new week! — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DeXEZbXET1D/

Revisiting a favorite room we designed a few years ago…a primary bedroom in a private home we designed with at Tennessee’s fabled . We love the quiet, ivory palette of this restful space, the barely there printed cotton draping the stoic iron bed from , and the restrained elegance of the linen portieres opening to the adjacent bath and dressing areas. And of course the languorous fob of our “Magnolia Pod” pendant for . Though this room didn’t try so hard, it seemed to accomplish so much. And therein lies the secret simple beauty. …and one thing leads to another. Bronze studded natural burlap walls in the main living area of a new project flank a seductive portal to a deep sea toned study just three steps up. Swipe left to swim into the underwater abstraction on the other side, where we centered a turtle green trapunto leather ottoman on a custom rug rippling with currents of watery colors. The buried treasure in the room? A 75” plasma TV hides behind the lacquered panels of an antique screen until needed. One thing does indeed lead to another. — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DeIY-v_EfLY/

More dreamy dahlias from our garden by the barn, here in the octagonal bay of our library at Elway Hall. Intoxicating color notes of burgundy and merlot saturate the petals of these dark beauties, nestling here in a ruby glass vase that belonged to my very Southern maternal grandmother, Nettie Sylvania Darr. Saturated herself in practical magic and dripping with natural wisdom when it came to gardening, “Miss Nettie” ignited an interest in the latter which still sparks today. I could see her hands as I cut and arranged these flowers in her mother’s vase, and I heard her voice caution me warmly not to crowd the vase with too many blooms… these were enough. Somehow when I looked at my finished work I was craving a big slice of red velvet cake. Hers were the best, and there was often a fresh one under a glass dome on her kitchen counter. W**e and dahlias with sanguine petals and the bittersweet aftertaste of red velvet cake…I enjoyed my little visit with Miss Nettie this afternoon. It’s been so long since she left us, since I hugged her from behind in her Arkansas kitchen. — view on Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DeFnSO8H0vq/
