Are you a fan of ā€œblatesā€? Part bowl, part plateā€¦ basically made for the meals that donā€™t fully belong in either. Pasta, salads, stir fry, late night snacksā€¦ these might actually be one of my favorite forms to make lately.

This set was a custom order, layered with some of my cone 10 reduction glazes that always end up doing their own thing in the kiln. The surfaces came out super rich on these.

Honestly this glaze never photographs the same twice. The cobalt gets super deep in some spots, breaks lighter over the texture, and when layered with my yellow salt glaze it creates all these little speckled/crystalline effects I canā€™t fully controlā€¦ which is probably why I like it so much.

Mug Shot Monday ā˜•ļø

Iā€™ve been making a lot of mugs lately and itā€™s interesting how small changes in shape completely change the feel of the piece.

Some feel better wrapped in two hands, some are lighter and taller, some feel more like an everyday coffee mug. Same glaze and clay body on all of them, but they all come out with their own personality after the firing.

I think the rounded one in slide 2 might be my favorite right nowā€¦ but I keep changing my mind.

Exciting dayā€¦! New parts from arrived and my ā€œantiqueā€ 2331 gas kiln (prob from the mid-70ā€™s) is basically good as new!! I replaced both the lid and floor, as well as lid hinge and the biggest upgrade was the new burner system. Canā€™t wait to start firing her!! šŸ”„ A huge thanks to Olympic Kiln Co. for their amazing customer service. šŸ¤©
