The foyer in my new home is completely different. To begin, I reversed the direction of the staircase (yes, you can do that!), opened the ceiling all the way up to the 3rd floor, and changed the shape of the foyer into an oval. THEN…we added sidelights to the front door, lucite balusters, and a custom stencil design for the floor. But the icing on the cake is the Zuber wall panels, made in France using their traditional woodblock and hand-painting techniques spanning back to the 1700’s.

I’ve always been fascinated by murals. There are several European companies that produce hand-blocked scenic murals. Looking through them, this one from (depicting Paris from the 1820’s) intrigued me. It has a certain visual language that I find remarkable. It’s bold but surprisingly easy to live with.

Was it Shakespeare who said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? Probably not, but it’s a wonderful sentiment that can be used in so many situations. For example, in my previous home, I created this ensemble of urn/pedestal/art prints. I really loved how the traditional elements of the urn and pedestal balanced the modern art, and I decided to use this grouping again in my current living room. The new room has a different feel…warmer wood tones, more pattern and color, yet this grouping still works. Cocktail table-custom by Sroka Design.
