We still have several prime weeks for outdoor dining ahead of us!

Spaces that bring the outdoors in, or vice-versa, are often some of the favorites in a home across the seasons, but especially in the warmer months. Memories are made over meals accented with a warm breeze, stories are read under dappled sunlight, and peace is found in spaces that bring together comfort and natural beauty.

Multifunctional rooms deserve just as much design attention as the primary rooms in a home—sometimes, the design of these spaces must be even more intentional to ensure the room serves several purposes in a way that feels natural.

The most successful projects happen when architecture and interior design are considered together from the beginning.

Some of the most formative years of my career were spent working for minimalist architects in New York and Washington, D.C. What I took away wasn't simply an appreciation for architecture—it was a belief that every design decision should be intentional.

I learned to think about interiors as part of a larger whole. How does a sightline unfold as you move through a house? How does furniture respond to the architecture? How does natural light change the experience of a room throughout the day?

The architects I worked with were meticulous. Every proportion, material, and detail was carefully considered. That discipline continues to influence how we approach projects today.

For me, the most successful interiors don't compete with architecture.

They complete it.

Early in my career, I wandered into a Scandinavian furniture showroom in New York and found myself captivated by a chair by Poul Kjærholm. His pieces paired seemingly opposing materials—stainless steel with leather, stone, or marble—with a quiet confidence that felt both rigorous and inviting. Every line felt purposeful, every material carefully considered.

Years later, after moving to Washington, I stepped into Furniture from Scandinavia—a gallery specializing in Danish design—and immediately recognized many of the same pieces.

"Oh, my old friends."

Great furniture designers devote their careers to understanding proportion, ergonomics, craftsmanship, and comfort. When something has already been resolved beautifully, I see value in honoring that achievement.

When I founded my own practice, I finally had the freedom to incorporate these works more intentionally. They have shaped my design philosophy more than almost anything else, and continue to inform how I think about interiors today—not as collections of objects, but as thoughtful compositions of material, proportion, and enduring design.

Hendrick Interiors is now Studio Ballou.

This transformation is more than just a name change and visual identity shift—it’s a natural progression that reflects a more personal vision for the brand as a studio-led practice. Since our founding in 2013, the firm has evolved from a boutique practice rooted in residential interiors into a broader, more holistic design studio. The name Studio Ballou reflects that growth, signaling a more expansive vision, a collaborative studio model, and an energizing direction for the future.

We are incredibly grateful for the clients, collaborators, and friendships that have been part of this journey so far, and we're excited for what's next. Additionally, many thanks to the team at Hanna Creative Co. for their elegant work on this rebrand.

We've got patterns and colors on the brain!

Neutrals have their quiet power, but there's something to be said for finding harmony in a combination of disparate patterns, colors, and textures.
