The Old Tattered Flag

The Old Tattered Flag Rug Hooking, Punch Needle, Stitching, over 300 colors of wool, candles, gifts and much more! Where to even start!!! In 2003 (from Ft. Stewart, Ga.)

We are Julie and Carol, the mother/daughter team of The Old Tattered Flag. In 1988 I (Julie) married my husband, Michael. We have had a great 33 years together with lots of adventure. We have two wonderful sons, Josh and Jeremy and are a retired military family. After 26 years of service where we moved 14 times, we have finally settled in Evans Mills, NY. In 1998, while stationed at West Point I f

ound the instruction for some Santas that were made of papier mache. A friend and I decided to give it a try and a crafter was born! I made hundreds of Santas and even sold some papier mache West Point cadets for a time. After I burned out on that I kept crafting and have done everything from wood burning, to candles, to cross stitch. I opened my first website and sold primarily paintings and textiles. I continued that while we were stationed for three years at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. When we moved to upstate NY I decided to open a little shop area in the back of our stone home. It was great fun while it lasted but soon the Army beckoned and I ended up closing it due to an impending move. Well, surprise, they asked us to stay at Fort Drum, so I decided to focus all my energy back onto my website. Over the course of 10 years though I felt that my painting had improved beyond my wildest expectations. Over time I would design a hooked rug pattern inspired from a painting and send it to my mother in Florida and she would hook it, send it back and I would sell it. I should back up a bit. During our time at Fort Drum, in upstate NY my parents would join us for the summer. My Dad had fond memories of the Salmon River in Pulaski and was so excited to be back on the river again. So, in 2008, with a newly built "in-law" suite, my parents settled in. We had a wonderful summer all together, my Mom and I crafting, my Dad fishing and we the whole family would gather for dinner at night. In August we were blindsided when my father died instantly of a heart attack. You quickly realize how unimportant small things are when you lose someone who means so much to you. My mother continued to stay with us but felt a need to return to Florida in the fall as her and my father had always done. It ripped my heart out to see her go back alone and in time Mom realized that although she hates the cold, she hated being alone more. We have always gotten along great and our love of crafting, antiquing, gardening, eating, well, just about everything brought us closer together. My husband and I convinced my mother to stay with us for good. So, onto brighter things.......as I mentioned, over the past 10 years I have tweaked my painting to a style I am comfortable with and realized with the closing of my shop that life had gotten really complicated. I am back to painting and designing patterns for hooking, penny rugs and punch needle and am just loving it. Mom's hook is "smokin" with all the hooking she is doing and I think she is really loving the exposure from the internet. She is fast becoming quite a textile artist and always has or order to work on. After a quick 14 month assignment in Missouri, we returned to our Stone house in Evans Mills and converted part of our home into a "wool lovers paradise". Our shop officially opened in September of 2014 and has been going strong since then with an expansion of a larger shop in 2020. So, with that, I look forward to lots of new designs for you and Mom always looks forward to hooking her next project. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us and please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

My husband just asked me if I wished we were “doing something today”. I said, “I am doing something”. He said “but do you wish you were relaxing?” I said, “I am relaxing”. You see, I was walking around the house enjoying these last days of summer. For the past couple of months I’ve been waiting for glorious Fall to arrive, but today, it’s beautiful out, peaceful and calm, so I took the opportunity to enjoy these last few sights of summer around our home. I’m always rushing from season to season, and while I am excited to see Mums and pumpkins show up on our porches, it sure does feel good to enjoy this day of summer beauty!

Introducing our new Evergreen Fringe die. This amazing die cuts wonderfully primitive and realistic wooly shapes for your wooly tree making. I personally prefer buying pre-made trees and wrapping the branches. We have two pre-made tree bases available and of course the Evergreen tree die.
*Of course you can still use your favorite tree making method of cutting wire lengths, wrapping them and assembling them on a dowel. Check out "By the Bay Needlearts" on Etsy for Wooly tree instructions.
*Video coming soon showing our method of wrapping a pre-made tree base, but get your supplies now as they are limited.
*Wool used was Garden Weeds but any pretty green will do!
*Basket is not available.

One of the things that was incredibly important to me when creating OTF Threads was color continuity.
As a stitcher/puncher myself, I know how frustrating it can be to fall in love with a color, order it again later, and discover that the new skein looks noticeably different from the one you already have.
So from the very beginning, consistency from batch to batch was something I talked about with our manufacturer—and I have to say, I am SO pleased with what they are producing for us.
The pearl cotton ball sitting on top in this photo from one of our older batches, while the balls underneath are from our most recent production batch, and seeing how beautifully and exactly the colors match makes me incredibly happy. ❤️
Of course, with any dyed fiber there can always be slight variations, but having reliable color continuity means that when you come back to OTF Threads for a color you love, you can feel confident that you're getting the color you remember.
It's one of those little things that may not seem very exciting…until you're halfway through a project and need another ball/skein.
Just another reason I'm so proud of this little thread line of ours.

I've been dying to use OTF Threads® R30 Grungy Red for awhile and our "Mystic House" design was the perfect pattern for it. I love the little smidges of brown that pop up here and there! Have you tried OTF Threads R30 yet? You must add it to your collection.
"Mystic House" pattern is a work in progress and will be available soon at The Old Tattered Flag Website....and yes, it will also be available for Rug Hooking!
