‘Jewelry from Scotland’. What does it mean? Many of you know I lived and taught in Scotland for many years, and when I moved back to Georgia I kept my house there. Until recently, when Scotland changed its housing rules, Charles and I shopped the Scottish towns for store merchandise, and brought it home. It’s mostly jewelry ( portable and light!)
The Scots feature more natural stones than we do, but the most interesting discovery was the use of dyed Heather stems which when sliced and polished made colorful ‘gemstones’. Who knew?

Tortoise shell jewelry is lightweight, easily carved, sturdy for its size and has historically been prized for those qualities. Victorian matrons also had household items made from tortoiseshell. ( One of the prettiest lampshades I’ve seen was composed of tortoiseshell panels.)
One of the few drawbacks is the fact protection is needed to preserve items from roaches- who like to nibble on the organic material.

Caregivers get more attention now than in some parts of our history ( though it’s still not enough).
I believe ANYTHING which eased caregiving tasks would be a blessing, and these gizmos would make feeding a bedridden adult or infant SO much easier.
Some were large, some small, some plain, some beautiful. And…. You could also use one as a neti pot.

A youngster recently called them ‘lady plates’ but Portrait plates probably fits better. These range from characters in plays, heroines from history, or stylized ‘fashion icons’ from times past.
Some were ‘giveaways’ from retail establishments, others were actually calendars! (The three calendar plates shown here are from 1910, 1911 and 1917.)

Pre-internet, it wasn’t easy to research finds, but I ultimately realized this was extremely old. The pattern is Aynsley ‘Chelsea Grape’, and it was only produced from 1820-1840. Aynsley ceased production in 2014.

Now for my story.
Years ago I found a piece of China in Scotland that intrigued me. It had a decal/transfer design similar to typical Wedgewood patterns, but instead of the rough Wedgewood ‘jasperware’ finish, it was smooth and glossy. Moreover, design color ‘bled’ slightly into the stark white china background.

Let me start with ‘what is Bone China’. Bone China clay contains finely ground bone fragments, which incinerate when the China is fired, leaving behind spaces which allow light to filter through when a piece is held up to the light.
The translucence makes it beautiful, and oddly enough the China is actually less likely to break than ordinary China.
If something is bone China, it usually is marked so.
