We have our most personal project to date. My family just moved into this gorgeous home in Milwaukee's Downer Woods neighborhood. I'm not sure I can put into words how happy or grateful I am to call this our new home. We were ready for more space on a quieter block.

🏡The house was originally built in the 1920s and is a Mediterranean style home. I have so much to share (in time)!!

I'm going to take you along on a very real journey of renovating a historic home, and the time, attention to detail and decisions one makes as we go through this process.

We are planning for at least 1 year out at this point and will be making cosmetic updates a bit quicker.

turned a standard builder-grade house into a custom masterpiece 🪄

I'm just a sucker for a Botticelli painting 😍 Learn more about this iconic piece 'Venus and Mars' from the National Gallery in London 👇

Its unusual shape suggests it was a 'spalliera': a panel painting designed to decorate the wall of a bedchamber, usually in celebration of a marriage.

'Venus and Mars' depicts Venus, the goddess of love, looking over at her lover Mars, the god of war, who is utterly lost in sleep. The cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome were greatly admired by the elite in Renaissance Florence and Botticelli was well known for the mythological paintings he made for his grand patrons. Mars' well-defined body is reminiscent of ancient sculpture, although it might have had another function. Women gazing upon beautiful male bodies were thought to be more likely to give birth to boys, essential for continuing the family line.

I was beyond thrilled to get an early look at the new exhibition last night. To get such a private look at masterpieces, including those by Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Lievens, was a joy.

"Art, Life, Legacy: Northern European Paintings in the Collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader" opens to members TODAY and to the public on Saturday, September 29th.

The collection of 75 paintings presented in the exhibition was assembled while the Baders were living in Milwaukee.

It's beyond fabulous. Go see it early and often. You'll catch me there between meetings 🖌️🖼️🎨

🚨We have an allergy to generic and boring kitchens.

Historically the kitchen was the embodiment of domestic servitude — plain and functional. Now it is the centerpiece of our home life. Quick test 👩‍🏫 Is this painting more about the person it depicts or the color yellow?

Don’t know? Exactly. We don’t have to choose. That’s because everything in figurative painting relates to two things at once: the other elements in the painting and the larger world the painting seeks to represent.🟡

The Yellow Scale by Czech artist František Kupka hangs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Kupka painted it in 1907, the year after Matisse painted “The Blue N**e (Memory of Biskra)” and four years before “The Red Studio.”

🎨He strove to dissociate color from its usual descriptive role. He wanted to let it be a thing in itself, expressive in ways that didn’t hinge just on the subject. Kupka himself talked about wanting to bathe this painting “in a single scale of colors.” He succeeded. But color theory be damned. This painting is too good — too fully human — to be reduced to scientific speculation. It’s more than just yellow.
