Shopping for a new mattress? Save this post for when you're in store.

Select the mattresses you're interested in, then lie down in your actual sleep position. Not a random position, your real one.

Take 15 minutes to evaluate the comfort and support you're feeling.

Educate yourself about what you're testing — know the type, firmness level, and construction so you understand what you're feeling.

If you sleep with a partner, test the bed together so you both experience the support and feel how much you move around on it.

Don't rush this step.

The mattress that feels mediocre for 15 minutes will feel even worse after 8 hours every night for the next 7-10 years. Your body will thank you for taking the time to choose right.
