GIFTS. A customer came in today looking for a gift for someone who had done her a huge favor. We chatted about the recipient who is an artist. From there we discussed some options for an appropriate gift. She ended up matching a mug from Eirene of IyaBlu' Inc and a plate from pottery by Rachel. They complemented each other in colors.

Out and about in the community. Sometimes we pack up our pottery and head out to events in the community. Come see Eirene (IyaBlu' Inc) and Rachel (pottery by Rachel) on Sunday August 16th. And it’s early enough in the day that you can still enjoy an afternoon Come To Leicester Studio Tour.

POTTERY EXPERIENCE / WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT. After the huge response to our Memorial Day events we are offering a series of pottery making experiences this fall. The first one is ready for registration: PUMPKIN PATCH. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29th, 10 am or 2 pm. You will make one larger pumpkin and one smaller pumpkin during this event. All tools, clay and glazes are provided by the studio. Pieces will be fired and ready for pickup 4-6 weeks afterwards in time for Halloween Decorating.

$45/participant. You must be pre-registered and pre-paid. Note - we limit each the session to 6 participants so that you can get our personal attention.

Teaser post. This is one of the many crafters that will be at our next pop-up market on Saturday October 3rd. Visit Weaverville. She is also planning on being part of Weaverville Art Safari WNC in November. We are so happy to be a part of the Weaverville arts community.
Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, Blue Ridge Basketry

As I was growing my inventory of baskets, I realized that I would need a way to “house” them and also to sell them in a store. Shelving takes up a lot of space, and they can’t be hung on a wall very easily.
So I came up with the idea to make a basket tree ( the acronym Blue Ridge Basketry was not lost on me) from cedar.
Responding to a post, a nice gentleman farmer from Erwin, Tn provided 2 cedar posts for me, one still with branches intact.
After hours of sanding  & smoothing the rough spots, but still maintaining the bark and lichen , it was ready for 5 coats of polyurethane.
Then, with the help of a woodworker friend, we attached the tree to a Christmas tree stand, and then to a plywood board for additional stability.
I put corks on the smaller branches, leather “booties” on the larger ones ( so no one puts an eye out!), and wrapped the entire tree with grapevine that I harvested locally. Artificial moss was glued on to hide the screws of the tree stand.
A seamstress friend made the burlap skirt to cover up the tree stand and plywood, I hung my baskets on it, and took some pictures. A photographer friend enhanced the backdrop for me, and now it’s ready for Facebook, Instagram, and hopefully it will find its way to a store where my baskets can find happy buyers.

How does a piece of pottery get started? Is it that we create a shape, and then decide how to glaze? Or do we sketch for a while and then decide how to make the pieces, or do we just sit and start working with the clay and see where it leads us? Yes to all of these. And more. Want to see the process of making pottery? Stop by our studio from 10-3 Monday to Saturday and watch one of our potters as they create a piece, or work with others to let them experience pottery. VACATION PHOTOS from DELFT Holland. Rachel has been touring through the Netherlands and Belgium. One of her personal highlights has been a tour of the Delft museum and factory. And at the end she got to paint a tile inspired by what she saw.
