As sustainable architects, we get excited about building healthy interiors. Homes are an often overlooked part of our physical wellbeing.

In traditional home building, building materials can pose health threats and release Volatile Organic Compounds and PFAS.

When we design homes we intentionally use safe paints, natural plasters, solid wood, and plant-based finishes. The furniture inside is made with natural fibers like wool, linen, and natural wood to reduce chemical off-gassing.

We also design to prevent mold which is a common issue in WNC. We do this by circulating air and welcoming in natural light.

If you would like to learn more about building healthy homes- you can read about it on our blog here!  https://www.assemblyab.com/designing-health-from-the-inside-out-and-the-rise-of-non-toxic-interiors/

Happy New Year! Here are the homes we designed and built in 2025. We're still waiting on final photos for a few of them.

All of these homes are green built and a few of them are net zero. Our goal for 2026 is to make every Assembly project a net zero one.

You can learn more about where we're headed by reading about the year behind in our recent blog post. https://www.assemblyab.com/celebrating-a-year-of-sustainable-and-unique-homes-in-asheville/

We completed this house in the spring, but haven't gotten around to taking professional photos yet. Three types of wood were used in the project: cedar for the siding and ceiling, locally milled red oak for the floors, and cherry for the cabinetry and window sills. There's a separate office building on the property and a chicken coop in the lower field. It's close to town, but feels like a world away.

Last year we completed this net-zero home and the roof garden was still in its infancy. Its grown a lot since then and was even blooming in late fall.

This home sits lightly on the land, preserving outdoor space and harnessing passive solar gain. It's efficiently designed and built with insulated exterior sheathing, heat pump HVAC and water heater. The interior is serene, featuring custom handmade walnut furniture crafted by the homeowner. The exterior is yakisugi, a naturally rot resistant wood siding that's charred with fire before install. 📸

A modern home we designed and built as a forever home with parking, living, and sleeping all on the same floor. All transitions from outside to inside are stepless, all doors are extra wide, and every room has large format windows facing distant views and forest. Bathroom floors are heated and there is abundant floor lighting for easy navigation.
