Antiqued French Encaustic Tiles Inspired by 14th-Century Motifs

Inspired by 14th-century French encaustic tile traditions, Emmi Micallef’s hand-painted tiles draw from enduring medieval motifs—among them the fleur-de-lys and the natural world. These designs reflect a period when ornament carried meaning, and nature offered quiet refuge within the austerity of medieval life.

Each tile begins with carefully studied historic sources and is translated through the artist’s hand. Kiln-fired and delicately hand-etched, the surface develops a soft, crackled patina reminiscent of antique ceramic. Subtle irregularities and tonal variation preserve the depth and authenticity characteristic of early European craftsmanship. In-stock.
