Drawing inspiration from historical reference, Emmi Micallef's original hand painted decorative tiles compliment HDM's reclaimed tile, wood and stone surfaces. Sharing a partnership with it's parent company Pavé Tile, Wood & Stone, Inc., a by-appointment showroom is available to the trade and homeowners to view and design from Pavé's showroom's extraordinary French and Belgian building material installations.

Reclaimed French Terra Cotta Flooring from Normandy, France.

Salvaged from a 19th-century women’s bathhouse on the Normandy coast, these handmade terra cotta tiles date to approximately 1875.

Nearly 150 years of use have softened their surfaces, creating a delicate palette of powdery rose, faded salmon, pale ochre, chalky cream, weathered red and smoky mineral gray.

Each approximately 6⅜” square tile bears the irregular edges, pits, mineral inclusions and subtle firing variations characteristic of authentic antique French terra cotta flooring.

Shown alongside Queen’s White Antiqued French Oak Flooring from our Great House Collection, the faded colors reveal how beautifully reclaimed French terra cotta pairs with pale European oak—the warmth of the clay against the quiet, weathered tones of the wood.

Antiqued French Encaustic Tiles Inspired by 14th-Century Motifs

Inspired by 14th-century French encaustic tile traditions, Emmi Micallef’s hand-painted tiles draw from enduring medieval motifs—among them the fleur-de-lys and the natural world. These designs reflect a period when ornament carried meaning, and nature offered quiet refuge within the austerity of medieval life.

Each tile begins with carefully studied historic sources and is translated through the artist’s hand. Kiln-fired and delicately hand-etched, the surface develops a soft, crackled patina reminiscent of antique ceramic.
