Nothing more satisfying than bringing our clients taste and vision mixed with their lifestyle to reality.

Some background on this client… they were downsizing from a single family in Salem to their condo in Cambridge. They were officially grandparents (but when you see them you’d never think they were old enough to be them), they had traveled around the world and back. Lived in so many unique places, collected trinkets, artwork and memories they wanted to bring to their home in Cambridge. The wife is a professional chef and an award winning author and the most humble woman given her success. She’s probably reading this correcting my grammar 😂. The husband was in the music industry and a founder of a record label to now a collector and seller of antique cars. In both of their line of work they were exposed to a lot of inspiration.

I share this as their home truly is a collection on ONLY things that they love. They commission custom wallpaper from their friend that is an artist, fell in love with marjorelle blue on their travels (you’ll see a photo in their hidden pantry on our website), fell in love with this backsplash prior to hiring us and we were able to incorporate the pendants they had in their past house above the island as they had significance to them. The cookbooks in the hallway displayed makes the wife smile, the countertops are this incredible quartzite that the wife and husband adore as the wife can chef it up without worrying about them, the walnut is the husbands favorite, and even down the wall colors.

Everything that was picked in this condo was something they absolutely loved.

When designing the kitchen we took a full inventory of what they had, measuring all items that were oversized and created a layout with the wife with interior organizers.

To us, this was such an incredible process working with a client that loves color, trusts the process and was capable of being totally transparent so we could take how they live, what they love and blend it together.

More to come on this project as there is a lot more to this story!

Wise words, Babe.

When we discussed this quote as a team, our designer brought up how we should talk about changes that come up on home renovations or new builds.

They happen and any builder we work with echos this… things will happen and we will figure it out. Between plumbers, electricians, painters, custom millwork, finish crews, sound and audio… tile crew etc etc I don’t think it’d be a stretch to say collaboratively we’ve seen it all. Something we love to credit our builders for is doing their best to find that talent to ensure when things come up they have a team that can support us all when we need it.

Moral of this is… find a team you know when things don’t go as planned they’re able to pivot. When it comes to pairing you with a builder we always start and end with personality. In the end you need to work with someone it is easy to be upfront with. Some say, well he’s going to be over budget. Our response would be well then let’s get him to work with our budget. Value engineering is a skill all builders have and one we love to be involved with as we can move the needles too. It’s a fun dance when you’re doing it with people you enjoy being around.

We give you permission to remove the guest coat closet and get that pantry you’ve been dreaming about.

When we first met this client she insisted we come through the garage as all of her guests do. As we began designing that very convo came to our minds. We realized there was absolutely no need for a guest closet by the front door if no one used the front door. If we got rid of it we could gain a dream pantry for this family.

Why would you keep a closet that is not used efficiently to satisfy what is “typical?” These are the types of things we uncover when working with you. Will you use the pantry many times a day vs the coat closet a few times a year? We ask questions to see where there may be an opportunity for your lifestyle to benefit with something more meaningful.

Letting go of this coat closet allowed for us to get an incredible walk in pantry with wallpaper the client had dreams about, a larger kitchen and a larger mudroom off the garage door. Wild to think a closet that was 3’ by 2’ being removed added so much value to the clients way of living. But this is what we do and what we do well 🙌🏽

After all - we are designing your home… it should cater to how you live.

Love at first sight.

We were on a mission to find a floor tile that was unique but not too wild and most importantly within budget.

Once we confirmed the blue tile we knew bringing in the walnut vanity would add just the right amount of warmth and classic-ness to tie it all together. Given that this was a development, without an end user we made up a buyer in our minds so we could consider what they’d want. We’d also be able to think about our past clients and how they each lived and bring some exciting layout ideas to the table based on that as well.

When it comes to working with any clients (your house or your development) it always comes down to the budgets. As designers we want to make sure we can stretch it in all the right ways and get the most incredible thing for it. Budgets are a great thing, they eliminate the thousands of options and make ones very clear. All of our vendors know our budgets for the home before walking in and this allows us to be efficient when sourcing and also great negotiators when we fall in love with something slightly over budget 🫣

Not sure what we love more, our clients or designing.

It’s almost like what came first the chicken or the egg?

Recently we were reflecting on where we were a year ago. Project wise, scope and personally as designers. Lots of hard work, late nights and happy and sad tears. I think our biggest growth this past year would have come from when a client changed their design budget 70% of the way in.

The construction ended up being over budget and they looked at any and all line items as a chopping block. The wife saw an opportunity to take over the remaining selections and from our stand point we have selected 95% of things it was just the 5% left. To us this crushed us. The last 5% could either make or break the 95%. We explained this to the client and we agreed we will be on retainer for ongoing misc needs based on a new budget.

It was the first time for something like this to happen to/ for us and felt like we lost a good friend in a sense. From the excitement, getting to know them, uncovering little moments that they’ll love in their new space to the weekly meetings, it all comes to stop. I began sharing this with other designers and realized it was a common thing and feeling other designers had. We get so attached to our clients and their vision of their home it is so hard to step back and enjoy the show. But, we do respect a budget and the circumstances.

This also taught us a valuable lesson business wise. When we take on a client, we only take on a certain amount to ensure we’re 100% solely on you. So when a clients design budget changes and our roles and scope does it makes a huge impact on our design team’s weekly billables. We turn away any projects that will interfere with our current workload. We are fully committed to our clients for the every step of the way and having this conversation up front now has strengthened every new client we have gotten since this. With every heart break comes growth 🤍

We’re excited to splash some color in here soon!

This was recently completed and now we’ve got the final touches coming in. Between artwork, linen cabinet, shelf decor and misc bathroom accessories.

The photoshopped giraffe artwork is growing on us though 😂

A new trend; Approachable sophistication.

For any home we’re designing this is a common trend for us. We want it to feel elevated, detailed and inviting. When you have the perfect blend of those three you have a happy client… forever. A home that will age with them and be flexible to grow with them.

Some of my details in this kitchen would have to be the backsplash, adds texture without screaming for attention, the simple yet comfortable cabinet pulls (they’re a personal favorite) and the Taj Mahal countertops, she’s indestructible. I think she’s making a come back. I will say she’s always been a go to for us.

Wild that this was completed over six years ago.

Time flies when you’re having fun. Excited to share a few more traditional projects we’ve got coming soon.

The amount of details we were able to get in this design truly pushed the boundaries. The way we hid the microwave, toe kick detail, interior accessories etc. but my personal favorite is this wall. I was determined to figure out a way to get the wine fridge to have a panel that looked like the other doors. Usually you see this done in a solid slab door vs the shaker door style being continued. Something about this just felt right. Thanks to Ken with never squashing my dreams but up for the challenge.

The best looking cat door around.

We knew we wanted the liter box out of sight and in an area that was easily accessible and the clients wanted to tie in some humor. They were naming the cat Jacques and thought a port hole style door would be incredible. So we began searching for one that would work with the door thickness. In the end it opened our minds up to getting more creative for details like this. There isn’t a ton of nice looking ones on the market so if you’re looking for the next shark tank idea, take this and run! We need better options 😂

We have an interesting take on this.

We not only focus on the cost and quality but also how will this age with how our clients intend to use the space? If it is a high traffic area, do we do stone or wood flooring? They both age beautifully but would one is easier to refinish than the other? Would it better to refinish a small area of stone or the entire wood floor? Would you prefer a porcelain so when it chips you have to rip it all up vs refinishing a stone? All of these things play a factor but it’s the clients lifestyle that makes one clearer than the other. It all comes down to how you use the space, how long you intend to be in the home, etc.

The cost of a product is part of the conversation but the value is what ends the conversation. Those conversations are so important to have about almost everything we do. We will always bring it back to how you live.

Hands down the best part of being a designer is this.

When we get to a certain point of the project where we know the clients lifestyle and style and the two begin to merge. This is when the magic happens. When they love the colors, textures and patterns we’re bringing to the table. All that play off of how they live and what makes them smile. Imagine going to use the bathroom and smiling at the color of the water closet? Or when you’re jumping in the shower and are over the moon about the finish the shower controls are? Or how about a place that stores your every day items in the counter but behind a cabinet door? When the life and style merges our job is complete.

Tailored Elegance.

In a strategic move, we relocated the coat closet, opening up valuable space for a more extensive pantry to meet the wife’s storage needs. Insightful planning revealed that guests primarily entered through the garage, prompting the shift in focus. The entry coat closet, now transformed, relinquished its real estate for a purpose far more fitting—a decision that contributed to the overall functionality and aesthetic appeal of the home.

Our goal wasn’t just met when the project concluded; it soared when the daughters returned from college and expressed their love for the transformed home. Every detail was woven with the intention to create an environment so inviting that the kids would eagerly return, turning this residence into a cherished gathering place.
