Travel Sunday: Ausable Chasm, Keeseville, NY

Ausable Chasm is a sandstone gorge about two miles long and is about 150 feet deep. Ausable Chasm is the namesake of the Ausable River, which runs through the gorge and empties into Lake Champlain about one mile away. The gorge started forming about 10,000 years ago through headward erosion caused by Rainbow Falls, a 91 foot waterfall at the gorge’s southern extreme. It is carved out of a 500-million-year-old, 520-foot thick exposure of Cambrian Potsdam Sandstone. The sandstone of the gorge, formed from ancient tidal flats, preserves ripple marks.

Travel Sunday: Middleton Place Charleston, SC

Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark in Dorchester County, South Carolina, known for having the oldest landscaped gardens in America, dating to the 1740s. Originally a 1700s rice plantation, it was the home of the prominent Middleton family, including Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Henry Middleton, the second president of the First Continental Congress. The site features the House Museum, the Plantation Stableyards, and the historic gardens, with a focus on interpreting the lives of both the Middleton family and the enslaved people who lived and worked there
