2 days ago I sheared one of my 2 gotland sheep. I combined that summer fleece with the two winter fleeces that came off of them in March. My spinning apprentice, Susan Modak, and i washed some of it on Friday. I washed the rest of it today. It is laying out in the sun to dry for the next couple of days. Look at that beautiful, soft, clean wool! Once it is dry, it will be ready for me to card it then spin it.

BIG NEWS! I applied in February and I am thrilled to announce that I was just notified that i have been selected by the Maryland State Arts Council to receive a $5000 Folklife Apprenticeship grant! I will be teaching and passing on my knowledge and skills in hand spinning yarns to an apprentice spinner who will work with me for the next 10 months! Thank you to the Arts Council for recognizing my skills in this art form and supporting me as I continue to pass on my passion for the fiber arts!

The sheep shed has been bedded with a thick layer of fresh dry straw and plenty of hay for ruminating to stay warm! I use a "deep bedding" system from fall to spring, where dry bedding is put on top of the old bedding which is composting and creating some heat! Bryn says it seems nice and cozy! Now that decent snowfall had better materialize tomorrow!
