Around here, we call ourselves unicorns.

We’re hard to put neatly into a box. Part creative, part technical, part strategic, part professional figure-it-outer.

We can dream up the big idea and obsess over the quarter-inch detail. See what could be and understand what it will take to get there. Move between intuition and information, beauty and function, imagination and ex*****on.

Each of us brings a different mix.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Because when our different perspectives, talents and skill sets converge, there’s a kind of alchemy that happens. Ideas get better. Problems get solved differently. One of us sees what another doesn’t. The whole becomes something more than the sum of its parts.

That’s the magic we believe in.

Not sameness. Not a single way of thinking or creating. A collection of rare talents that, together, allow us to make something remarkable.

And finally, our unicorns are building their Stables. 🦄

They require something more physical. More immediate.

To see how light moves across a surface.
To feel the weight and texture of a material.
To understand how elements sit together in real space.

This is what allows decisions to move from uncertain to clear.

The environment plays a larger role than most people realize.

When we launched Sonderlust in early 2021, we weren’t just imagining a design studio.

We were building toward something bigger.

A studio that could bring design, construction and procurement together in a more thoughtful, integrated way. A place where ideas could move beyond drawings and materialize. Where we could create, source, collaborate, gather and build something entirely our own.

And from the beginning, a space of our own was part of that vision.

Two years ago, we gave that vision an address.

We bought a building.

And as anyone who has taken on a project of this scale knows, bringing a vision to life takes time. There are parts of the process that simply can’t be rushed. After two years of planning, designing, problem-solving and laying the groundwork, meaningful construction is finally underway.

It’s hard to put into words what this moment means. What began as an idea between two women with a very clear sense of what they wanted to build now has a permanent place to call home.

Getting here has required a lot of us. Long days and late nights. Constant problem-solving. Grit and perseverance. Trusting our instincts. Taking risks. Wearing more hats than we ever anticipated. And continuing to believe in the bigger vision, even when we were still figuring out exactly how we would get there.

Over the coming months, we’ll transform this building into the future home of the Sonderlust studio and experiential showroom, a place for our team, our partners, our clients, our materials and the work that continues to shape who we are.

This space was always part of the plan.

Seeing it become real feels pretty damn special.

And there is so much more to come.

The Ranch House sits at the heart of Devil’s Thumb Ranch, where history and hospitality come together.

As the property’s original homestead, the Ranch House was thoughtfully reimagined and expanded to honor its character while creating a warm, elevated dining experience for guests. We had the privilege of refreshing its interiors, breathing new life into the space while preserving what has always made it special.

A meal. A drink. A celebration with friends. A date night by the fire. The Ranch House was designed to feel equally at home in all of them.

Every furnishing, finish and detail was selected to feel authentic to its setting while supporting the way the space is experienced today.

At Sonderlust, our approach is never about changing the story of a place.

It’s about helping that story continue through thoughtful, intentional design.

Green has a way of finding us.

In landscapes and textiles. Vintage finds and material palettes. On the table, on the jobsite and, more often than not, in the matcha in our hands.

Somewhere along the way, we realized just how often it appears.

Inspiration doesn’t always arrive in grand moments. More often, it’s found in the things we naturally gravitate toward: the colors, materials and details that quietly shape the way we see and, ultimately, the spaces we create.

Our goal is to bring that clarity forward.

To create a process that feels grounded from the beginning.

Where decisions are informed.

Where options feel considered rather than overwhelming.

Today marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse - a year of momentum, courage, creative risk, and ideas taking shape faster than expected. The kind of energy that builds things.

To mark it, we’re starting a new Sonderlust ritual.

From now on, a unicorn may quietly appear somewhere at one of our job sites. Not styled. Not announced. Just placed.
