Spring is just around the corner, and for some that may mean the winter blues are gone and you want to get back to projects!
This Tuesday Tip highlights the things to consider environment-wise when you're getting ready to start painting a room. It's not all about what the room situation is like - consider what the weather is like outside. Most times you will want to crack a window - so is it raining? Is it humid? Is it really hot? None of those situations make for the best painting time. Consider waiting an extra day until the sun is back out and it's not humid. The time it takes to dry in between coats will be less - and that means time saving for you!

Who else is relieved that we've made it to the weekend? I may be just a bit more excited than some of you... I'm outta here for a week! Time to hit the sand and the sun and just reboot. I'm wishing you all a silver lining in every situation this weekend.

This Tuesday Tip seems like common sense - but there's a lot of questions this still come up around it for those that may be newer to it.
Think of it this way... you know when you have that perfect crisp outfit on for that client meeting, but you hit a bump just as you took a sip of your coffee? You've done everything else to make sure you stay crisp, but life happens. That's the same thing when you paint.
Even when being the most careful, life happens, and paint will end up SOMEWHERE on you that you weren't planning on. So where those old cruddy sweats and tee shirt with a hole in it. Because life happens. :)

Any other vintage shop hoppers getting an early start to the day? Here in Illinois and Wisconsin, there's a fantastic event put on that has hundreds of shops participating this week. So it's time to shop hop and hunt! This salvages automotive spring and vintage Auto-Lite spark plugs were found on previous shop trips - so who knows what I'll find this weekend for a new upcycled decor project! It might be hard to beat this salvaged auto spring light. ;)

It's Tuesday Tip time. And honestly - I even after all these years of painting - still sometimes do this backwards, and it's normally because I'm feeling lazy and just want to get some paint on the walls.
Trimming in the room first makes a big difference. This is also where a really good paint brush stands out and makes the job easier. My go-to is Purdy - spend the extra couple dollars - if you do then you most likely won't have to spend the time before in trimming things off with painter's tape. My tip on this just make sure you do the trimming in when you have the most energy. It does take a bit of focus (and that good brush), so for better lines along the edges, that energy counts.

And for this ... Choosing a paint color... the ever troublesome first task of getting a project started. Narrowing it down to the top five is normally easy enough to do after standing in front of the paint color chips for awhile. The next step tends to be the most important - how will it really look like in your house?
There's a couple different ways you can test the colors. Option 1 (and my preferred) - is just taking samples of those paints and painting them up on the wall. This is a great way to see how they look in the light in the room throughout all times of the day. Option 2 is similar - but instead of directly on your wall, use a white poster board or something similar to paint the samples on and then move it around the room to also see the colors in the light.
There's one difference between these - the color painted with a white base, and the color painted with whatever base your wall currently is. If you aren't going to do a prime coat first, and are using a paint/primer in one - keep this in mind!

For this Tuesday Tip: Paint Storage

I can't even tell you how many paint cans I have - both in sample sizes and in gallon containers. Each room has it's own color and all those sample containers... ya, they'll be used for some project one day.
What's the best way to store all these? Make sure to seal them very well. Find a cool dry place. And then make sure to clearly mark each container for what room they were used in for when you need to do touch ups.
I've also found it beneficial to the seals if stored upside down. Now really the tip I need to come up with is how what to start using those sample jars!

The Before... and the much upgraded After. This is a great example of a project any skill level can tackle! This old 3-drawer dresser, is one of those build-it-yourself items from Target, 15 years old. Now with a simple cost of paint a couple license plate embellishments and k***s - it's upgraded and has an extended life!
I want to comment a bit about the license plates selected for this project. They are the years family members were born - making this project even that more special. It's always in the details that the true special meaning of a project comes out.

Who else is a wood admirer out there - and more specifically is a live edge admirer?
This project took a bit of time to find the piece of wood that would be just right - but I think it was the right pick. But it’s not light!
Have you used hair pin legs before? I think these were the right fit for this project - would you have gone with something different?

Accent wall painting talk. I'm going to start sharing tips and additional décor food for thought. Today it's all about accent walls.
Growing up we didn't have white walls. Paint was a true avenue of the way my mom decorated the house. I'd say that history continued with my design preferences, and transferred into accent colors specifically for a single wall. Typically accent walls are either done with a very bright or a very dark color, and that can feel risky. So test it first. In the next tip, I'll share some best practices on how to test colors on a wall.
