When I was little, I was really into dance. My parents got me started in a ballet and tap when I was 5 years old. Dance was everything to me. I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. I continued dance up until we moved to Michigan in 8th grade. I had to join a class late after we moved and just couldn't fit back in.
The summer before 9th grade, band camp happened and from that moment everything changed. A whirlwind of practices, performances, competitions, and honors bands. Eventually came college auditions, more practicing, more performances, learning new instruments, a tour, recitals, and graduating with a degree in music. Everywhere I have found myself since, I've been a part of an orchestra or community band.
Being able to finally create something that combines my woodworking with something with another that has always been such a part of my identity, has meant the world.
Our band lost a beloved member of our band and owner of Senseney a few years ago. This year, the band commissioned a piece in her memory that we premiered in June. It was a beautiful piece that features the warm notes of a bassoon solo, as she was our principal bassoonist, as well as singing from the band. Some other notable details I loved about the making of this piece was that is was composed by a woman, and Lori was a big proponent of women in business. It was also written at a level that could be played by middle school and high school bands, since music education and outreach is at the heart of Senseney. Each piece of music has "In memory of Lori Supinie" written at the top, so she will truly always be around in the music.
The area where we practice was named in her memory, but just had a vinyl sticker showcasing the name. This new sign is a well deserved upgrade for the band and person special to the heart of the band. I was honored to be able to present this at the premier concert as well. (Swipe to see the band!)
