Sometimes, to interrupt a pattern, we have to interrupt the pattern.

Allow me to elaborate.

This week, I stopped by the lake house to review the recent kitchen remodel. When I arrived, I saw the tile installation—and my immediate reaction was incredulity.

I mean, in what world does this out-of-place tile look correct?

I got angry. For a moment, I even felt righteous in my anger.

Then I paused.

I went for a walk. Later, I journaled about what I was grateful for. It was my 55th birthday, after all, and I have so much to be grateful for: my health, my family, and this new house—a place that has already become a refuge for me.

As the day moved on, I became more able to hold gratitude alongside disappointment. Eventually, I found the perfection in this very imperfect installation.

Sometimes, to interrupt a pattern, we have to interrupt the pattern.

I laughed out loud as I recognized the lesson: one tailored to pierce my attachment to perfect pictures. A reminder that life is too important to be ruled by rules, expectations, and rigidity alone.

By the time I spoke with the project manager the next day, I began by wondering whether I could have been clearer in my instructions.

Her response?

“The moment I saw the installation, I was flabbergasted.”

Suffice it to say, the tile will be corrected.

But the lesson remains: disruption is not always a mistake in the story. Sometimes, it is the story.
