Today as part of AIANH’s Education Day at Philips Exeter Academy, we toured the Class of 1945 Library designed by Louis Kahn and completed in 1971. We have visited before to walk the exterior, but today to also experience the building from the interior was inspiring. The concrete, brick, stone and glass are layered and connected together in a cohesive way that shows appreciation for what each material can and should do. The large scale of the central atrium is unique with the huge concrete portals, and also views into each floor of the structure and the materials beyond. Small details are well executed and many enhance the function of the library for the students. See the photo of the study books and operable interior window shutters.
We are fortunate to have this incredible building here in New Hampshire, designed by arguably one of the most talented architects that ever lived. The academy tightly controls visitors, but anyone who is able to attend a tour will be able to see how thoughtful design can enhance spaces and human experience

Wellness has become a word we see a lot lately, particularly when it comes to thinking about how we want to live. Recently we have been experimenting with Sauna as a personal ritual. Winter can be a perfect time to find relief from the extreme cold and even embrace it as a therapy alongside intense heat. We have been using our Tent Sauna as a bridge to plans we are developing for a permanent Sauna on our property. This experience of being in temperatures of 190 degrees has helped inform us on the routine of Sauna, that we’ve been passing along to our clients currently in the midst of their Sauna designs. It’s exciting to find something that is enjoyable and beneficial on many levels.

We spent yesterday afternoon at the Currier Museum of Art. We viewed beautiful artwork and toured both of the Frank Lloyd Wright homes, the Zimmerman House and the Kalil House.
The Kalil House is known as a Usonian Automatic. Of the seven in existence, this is the only one open for tours. The custom concrete blocks form the basis of the design, with the intention of simplifying the construction and minimizing cost. Though neither of those things happened the house offers a different type of Wright home that blends warm details and finishes with the starkness of concrete.
Although we’ve toured the Zimmerman House before, it reminded us that we could spend the whole day there, looking at all the incredible details. Subtle custom lighting, brick and glass details, fixtures and furnishings all work perfectly together.
Building codes today prohibit many of the features used in these houses, but their designs still offer many lessons in scale, siting, proportion, use of materials, and overall enhancement of the occupants quality of life and connection to nature.
We also saw the current exhibition: ‘Joined Together: 30 Years of the Furniture Masters’. Since it’s such a small world, our good friend’s father Ted Blachly had pieces on display, his Curly Maple Desk and Lawton Desk.

Just wrapped up three days in Boston attending the National AIA Conference! Never enough time, but we connected with colleagues and friends, and attended a list of seminars, keynote speakers and tours.
Highlights included celebrating Deborah Berke, FAIA receiving the Gold Medal, a conversation with Pete Buttigieg, former US Secretary of Transportation and hearing from Dami Lee an entrepreneur architect and prominent YouTube creator.
Our tour of MIT.nano gave an insight into the world of nanotechnology research and the building that supports it. And an example of micro-printed names composing a larger image.
The Charles River Speedway rehabilitation and restoration designed by Bruner Cott brought us through the transformation of a group of derelict buildings into a vibrant destination for dining and entertainment.
We ended with a boat tour of Boston Harbor where we learned about completed and future landscape development along the shoreline that addresses rising sea levels.
Although we live and work nearby it’s always fun and exciting to explore more of Boston, in this case the rapidly changing Seaport District juxtaposed with the tradition and history of the North End.

A bit further north, Taos feels like a smaller version of Santa Fe, but with an incredible local art scene. Galleries are everywhere surrounding the Plaza. We visited the Taos Museum of Art at Fechin House, including a new wing that opened the weekend we arrived.
Not far over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the Earthship Community. There are currently over 70 earthships, we did a self guided tour through the visitor which was once an inhabited earthship home.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taos Pueblo community or Tika Native Americans inhabits adobe buildings over a thousand years old. With a mostly peaceful history, ancestors have dealt with occupation and violence multiple times. Each year the Tika people make a 40 mile round trip hike to Blue Lake their sacred site as the lake provides water and nourishment to the community. Previously owned and controlled by the US Forest Service, President Nixon returned ownership to the tribe in 1970.
Originally the homes were accessed through a hole in the roof via ladders. All of their cooking was done outside, the domed shaped adobe structures are where they baked bread among other food.
Also, a fantastic spot for dinner is Love Apple. Great food in a 200 year old chapel.

Georgia O’Keeffe is a fixture in the history of American Art and especially art in New Mexico. We visited the very busy Georgia O’Keeffe museum in Santa Fe on Friday afternoon. Her success in art is obvious, but her independence and determination to live her life as she wanted was fascinating.
At Ghost Ranch in the town of Abiquiú O’Keeffe spent time painting the dramatic landscapes of layered rocks.
Meow Wolfe, was a completely different experience than any traditional museum. Also known as The House of Eternal Return, a long list of artists worked together to create a maze of spaces with creative use of material, light and texture. We were there for hours, exploring and finding and trying to not miss anything.

Our first day in Santa Fe included a visit to the International Folk Art Museum. We spent time learning about Telephone Wire Art in the exhibition ‘Weaving Meanings’. Artists from South Africa create vessels and sculptures using a variety of colored wire.
In the Girard Gallery, architect and interior designer Alexander Girard had curated a huge collection of folk art sculptures, tapestries, fabrics and paintings from around the world. The Huichol Yarn Paintings are created by using a layer of beeswax on a plywood sheet that when warmed by the sun allows yarn to be set into the wax.
In downtown Santa Fe The New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary included an interesting piece by Max Cole using tiny repetitive lines in black ink. Other great stops for us- Ojo Santa Fe for a spa experience and dinner on the historic Plaza

Just got back from a 9 day trip thru New Mexico! We explored over 1000 miles. The southwest has such a serene and inspiring landscape, mixed with exciting cities and towns, art museums and galleries. After a brief trip along the Mexican border for thesis research 20+ years ago, it was great to take more time in this state.
Look for more posts in the coming weeks to highlight some of the trip.

Providing site analysis for a large land parcel is challenging and exciting! The possibilities can be endless and being able to clearly represent ideas graphically to focus discussions is extremely important. In this project we are working with previous clients to further enhance their experience with their land.

Yesterday was a day full of architectural preservation around the state. In the morning our barn frame, dismantled and relocated from Maine to New London was being erected. When complete this 120+ year old frame will get a new life in a new place.

The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance hosted its annual preservation awards at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH. Prior to the ceremony we took a tour of the nearby Chandler House. Currently being restored by the Currier, this home is certainly a diamond in the rough. Though originally built in the Italianate style, it is being restored to the Victorian style it was known for during the 1880’s. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are inspiring. Certainly a worthwhile project for the Currier.
