History and design united in this field trip! First-year students in the principles and elements studio visited the reynoldahouse and had wonderful tours of the home. At the end we spent some time sketching the art gallery spaces for our incoming project. A wonderful experience!

Craftsmanship Through Cranes: On the first day, first-year Interior Design students started with something deceptively simple: folding an origami crane.

The goal wasn't to make a perfect crane. The goal was to practice.

Some cranes were uneven. Some were…questionably cranes. 😄 And that's exactly the point.

Learning to design means learning to do things you don't know how to do yet. New skills rarely feel comfortable at first. There is frustration, uncertainty, and plenty of wondering, “Am I ever going to get this?”

But practice changes things.

With each attempt, folds become more precise, hands become more confident, and mistakes become easier to recognize and correct. Eventually, something that once felt impossible starts to feel possible.

Craftsmanship takes practice. So does design.

We hope this small exercise gave our students a glimpse of both the uncomfortable feeling of learning something new—and the relief and pride that comes when you finally get it.

Our second year Interior Design Students have spent the past several weeks turning their ideas into reality for greeNest’s 2026 Giving Rooms fundraiser.
