This antique Klondike No. 16 egg incubator was manufactured by the Klondike Incubator Company of Des Moines, Iowa, during the height of America's poultry-industry expansion, likely between 1898 and 1910. Named after the famous Klondike Gold Rush era, the company's incubators were marketed as modern agricultural technology that allowed farmers to hatch large numbers of chicks without relying on brooding hens. Constructed as a finely crafted furniture-grade cabinet with turned legs, paneled hardwood construction, original painted graphics, and decorative hardware, the No. 16 reflects the transition from Victorian craftsmanship to the more practical farm equipment of the early twentieth century. These incubators typically operated using a hot-water heating system and kerosene lamp, requiring careful monitoring of temperature and humidity. Surviving examples are increasingly scarce, particularly those retaining their original finish, manufacturer decal, and model designation. Because this example displays its original "The Klondike" identification panel and appears largely intact, it is both an important piece of agricultural history and an attractive decorative display item.
