“Silk Pursing”

Hi I’m Phyllis and I welcome you to Decor Fleurish! Thank you for stopping by! I am so blessed to be here and to meet all of you….the “Lovers of Everything Old Becomes New Again” Tribe.

Have you always loved the beauty and intrigue of vintage? I believe that I have. My love of “Everything Old” began at the tender age of 4 or 5. It was then, during the summer months in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, that my mother’s favorite pastime was to attend country estate auctions. Of course, she had to drag me along with her….but in hindsight, I know for sure that she didn’t have to do much dragging! I loved to go! There was something exciting and anticipatory about all the commotion and people waving numbered paddles in the air with the hopes of being the highest bidder on the treasure being showcased by one of “the runners”. The auctioneer spoke really fast “the cattle rattle”, chanting away the current bid and the number needed to outbid and win the prize. The smell of the fried food and apple crisp at the concession stand, hay from the barn, and warmth of the sun…all fond memories of my special time with my Mom, and the beginning of a lifetime of hunting for the perfect treasures.

As I look back, I realize that from doll houses to dorm rooms to my first home as a young bride, my passion for decorating with pretty and unusual finds was consistent. If I couldn’t afford it, I found a way to find a bargain or someone else’s trash and turn it into a treasure of my own. My best friend always said to me “Phyllis, you could turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse”….and so it was, and over the years my “silk pursing” has been an everyday way of life. During the 1990’s I opened the most wonderful Antique Boutique on the shores of Lake Winnisquam where I specialized in Farmhouse, Primitives, and Vintage Finds of all design.

If I had a motto it would be “I’m going to make everything around me beautiful, and that will be my life”, a quote from Elsie de Wolfe. Born in New York City, de Wolfe was acutely sensitive to environment from her earliest years, and became one of the first women interior designers, replacing heavy Victorian styles with light, intimate effects and uncluttered room layouts. I am not Elsie de Wolfe....but I do love her sentiments!
