Ladders are made for wine too!

When the bottle of chablis is on the top shelf, a ladder is a must.

Despite the lull in posts, we have been busy. We’ve done several projects since the last update and will be catching up, starting with one of our most recent projects.

opened their location in Adair Park in downtown Woodstock in January. We were tapped to design, build, and install all of the cabinetry for the store, including the table base, point-of-sale counter, glasses bar, and the wine racking. This was the biggest job we’ve ever had, stretching out over five months. The central table is 18 ft long and 4 ft wide, with double-sided base cabinets topped with two slabs of Corian. The glasses bar has a chest of drawers under a wine glass rack, with room for 54 glasses. The point-of-sale counter has storage on the backside and an open-aired refrigerator built into the customer-facing side. Both the counter and chest have a matching Corian top.

The biggest piece is the wine racking. Kory Luebke, the owner, wanted to display the bottles standing up, vs laying down in the traditional X lattice, so the labels could be seen. The bins were designed to hold six bottles per bin. The sloped display boxes have LED lighting integrated into the topside. The two art boxes have a Corian piece under the LED art light. Above the wine coolers on the short wall, the bins were built larger to accommodate magnum-sized bottles. Fully loaded, the racking can hold close to 3,100 bottles of wine. Atop each tower is a storage box used for overflow stock and special order awaiting pickup. The racking is 33 feet long and 12 feet high. A rolling library ladder was included to help get up to the upper reaches of the wall.

The finish is from Renner, an Italian two-part ‘paint’ that has the finish and a catalyzer mixed before spraying. It cures very hard and is perfect for the wine racking. This was the first job I’ve used Renner and have been very impressed with how it turned out and has held up.

Visit Private Somm in downtown Woodstock for the hard to find label or help in picking out the perfect bottle for this weekend’s dinner.

It's been a minute (35 weeks apparently 😬) since we been on the socials. We've been busy and just fell out of the rythym of posting. But I'm fixing that now. And what better way than to kick off the comeback tour with a new website!

Head over to woodstockandiron.com and check it out. We think it looks fantastic. And as self-assembled furniture always fails and disappoints, our original DIY site did the same. So, we got a professional to make it right: Michelle at . She and her husband did a phenomenal job at tailoring it to what I wanted and making it so much better than my try.

So go check it out. And if your website needs help, or you need a new one, get in touch with Michelle and let her work her magic.

It's been a while since I've posted project photos. . I'll be catching up soon. Most recently...

I finished this project earlier this week for a young couple in Marietta, who just bought their first home. The space is a former garage that had been converted into a living room by previous owners. The couple wanted to make it a living room and use the blank wall as a focal point. We designed the unit around 1) an inset electric fireplace and 2) the size of the TV. The bump out was designed to give the large TV space to hang with the base cabinets and bookcases filled in around it. The base cabinets are shallow depth to let the bump out carry the elevation on the wall.

The back of the bookcases and the bump out are clad in solid wood shiplap from . This was the first time doing shiplap and it was a nice challenge to see come together.

The bookcases have fixed shelves while the base cabinets have an adjustable shelf. Cabinet doors are on soft-close clip-on hinges. Both the TV and fireplace use existing outlets on the original wall.

Everything is painted in a white urethane enamel cabinet paint.

The big challenge in this space was the elevation of the floor. Most houses are not built square and we always deal with something being out of level or plumb. This floor took it to an extreme with a slope of 1 3/4" over the 14' of wall.

I always like to get to know my clients and their living situation to help design something that is unique and the best functioning piece for them. After my initial site visit, we realized that I knew Kaylee in my previous life as a teacher in Cobb County: she was my student in world geography in 9th grade. That made this project extra special for me, having an unexpected personal connection. It's amazing how small this big world can be sometimes.
