head’s up...long post ahead...🤪
we’ve been keeping immediate family in the loop, but I wanted to share an update and a little bit of my story here, too, because it’s real life and Instagram isn’t all rainbows and sunshine.
long story short, two weeks ago at a month postpartum, I started to feel pain, swelling, and redness in my left calf...a sign I was told to look out for when I was discharged from the hospital. thankfully, we had Bode’s one month appointment with our family practitioner that day, so I brought it to my doctor’s attention.
after an ultrasound and bloodwork, I was diagnosed with a few small clots in my popliteal vein (I was today years old when I learned that was even a body part 🤣) and started on a blood thinner that takes a couple days to start working.
a few days later, on Saturday night, I started to feel more swelling and pain, but it had started to move up into my thigh, so we called my doctor and she suggested we head to the ER to be safe.
we went into the ER, they ran a blood test that showed my meds hadn’t started working yet, and discharged me with instructions to take an extra dose the next day and elevate my leg.
I did as I was told, but the pain and swelling continued to get worse. we went back to my doctor on Monday, and they ordered another ultrasound which showed the clot had grown up into my thigh (femoral vein) and that my blood thinners still weren’t kicking in. my doctor recommended I see a vascular surgeon to discuss the possibility of surgery to remove the clot.
fortunately, we have two family friends with expertise in the field we could contact, and they both recommended I check into the ER overnight to be tested and monitored. the main concern with clots is that pieces can break off and travel to the lungs, blocking blood flow there...this complication can be fatal.
during my time in the hospital, my medication finally kicked in, but as my surgeon asked more and more questions, he was puzzled as to why the ER doctor didn’t take more action to prevent the clots from getting worse. I had a CT scan that showed there are several small clots in my lungs, which likely could have been avoided if I had received an injection when I went to the ER Saturday night, but shouldn’t cause issues moving forward since they are so small.
I am officially on the mend and under the care of an incredible doctor. even though the last two weeks have been excruciating (at times, worse than labor 😖), I’m so grateful for the care, support, and love we’ve received from everyone. it’s going to be a long road to recovery with several months on medication, but I’m excited to slowly but surely get back to a new normal with my little family. 🤍
mkay, that’s all. thanks for reading my novel 🤪
