In 1858, Our Lady came to Bernadette, a poor fourteen-year-old girl gathering firewood near Lourdes.

Not to the powerful.
Not to the well known.
To a child nobody was looking at.

Maybe that's why this image feels so close to Christmas.

God chose a stable.
Mary chose a cave.

And on the base of this statue are the very words she spoke to Bernadette, in her own dialect: ""Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou."" I am the Immaculate Conception.
